SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah senior punter Tom Hackett became just the second unanimous consensus All-American in school history today with his selection to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) first team. Also today, Britain Covey was named a first-team Sporting News Freshman All-American as a punt returner.
Hackett is just the second Ute to earn unanimous consensus honors, joining Louie Sakoda (2008, kicker). Both Hackett and Sakoda were named to the first-team of all five of the teams used by the NCAA to determine consensus All-Americans: Walter Camp, AP, FWAA, Sporting News and AFCA.
While this is Hackett’s first time as a unanimous consensus selection, he is the only two-time consensus All-American in school history, having also made the team in 2014. This also marks Hackett’s second appearance on the AFCA All-America team. The only other Utes to earn AFCA honors were defensive lineman Luther Elliss (1994), defensive back Eric Weddle (2006) and Sakoda (2008).
Covey, an honorable mention All-Pac-12 return specialist, ranks third in the Pac-12 and 19th in the nation in punt return average (11.7). He is second in the Pac-12 in punt returns (21) and third in punt return yards (246). Covey was also named to the Pro Football Focus’ Freshman All-America team as a first-team wide receiver.
Utah leads the nation in net punting (43.67) behind Hackett, whose 47.8 punt average leads the Pac-12 and ranks third in the nation. The two-time Ray Guy Award winner as the nation's best punter and three-time first-team All-Pac-12 selection has placed 24 of his 55 punts inside the 20-yard line (43.6%), 11 inside the 10-yard line and two inside the five and leads the Pac-12 in punts of 50+ yards with 20.
