SAN FRANCISCO -
In a poll taken by the Pac-12 women’s gymnastics coaches, two-time defending champion Utah was voted the preseason favorite to win the 2016 Pac-12 regular season title, the conference announced today.
Utah received 49 points and six of the seven first-place votes cast to place ahead of UCLA (41), Stanford (39), Oregon State (30), California (24), Arizona (21), Washington (13) and Arizona State (7). Stanford received the other first-place vote.
It is Utah’s second-straight year as the preseason No. 1. The Utes, who won back-to-back Pac-12 Championships in 2014 and 2015, were also the regular season champions both seasons. Utah finished second at the NCAA Championships last year, just five-hundredths of a point behind Florida.
The Pac-12 preseason coaches’ poll aligned with the order the conference teams were picked in the national preseason poll released yesterday. Six of the eight Pac-12 teams are ranked the preseason top 25: No. 4 Utah, No. 6 UCLA, No. 8 Stanford, No. 12 Oregon State, No. 14 California and No. 18 Arizona.
Utah’s season-opener on Jan. 8 against BYU will be the first gymnastics meet of the season televised live nationally on Pac-12 Network (it will also air on Pac-12 Mountain).
