Utah gymnastics recruit MyKayla Skinner has been named to the U.S. Senior National Team after tying for seventh in the all-around at the 2015 P&G Championship on August 15 in Indianapolis. Skinner, who also placed second on vault and tied for third on floor at the P&G Championship, kept her Olympic hopes alive by making the national team.
The next major meet for Skinner, now in her third year as a member of the U.S. Senior National team, is the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, from Oct. 23-Nov. 1.
Skinner helped the USA win a gold medal at the 2014 World Championships in Nanning, China, where she individually placed third on vault and fourth on floor.
The Gilbert, Ariz., native signed with the Ute gymnastics team last November but deferred enrolling in school for a year to pursue a berth in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The USA Olympic Gymnastics Trials for women will be held on July 8 and 10, 2016 in San Jose, Calif.
While Skinner has been chasing her Olympic dream, plenty has been going with her future teammates, who begin reporting to the University of Utah this Friday for the start of classes on Monday, Aug. 24.
The Red Rocks will begin strength and conditioning training next week and will participate in the annual U Fan Fest on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 5-7 p.m. at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Other events on the fall schedule for the Ute gymnasts include a ring ceremony honoring their 2015 Pac-12 Championship at the Utah-Michigan football game on Sept. 3.
The team returns to a renovated training facility. Over the summer, the Dumke Gymnastics Center underwent a facelift that included new balance beams and matting, new tables and modalities in the training room, and a fueling station, as well new computers and furniture in the team lounge.
