The Utah cross country team reported this week for preseason camp. The Utes will spend a few days training in Heber City as the preseason gets underway.
"I'm pleased thus far with our fitness," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Our gals have obviously done a good job this summer. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I know this group is capable and willing.
"Camp is an opportunity to begin developing team unity, as well as the coaching staff, to introduce any changes we feel are necessary to move this group forward."
Leading the way is sophomore Sarah Feeny, who won her collegiate debut last season and was the top Utah finisher at the NCAA Regional Championships. Senior Susannah Hurst, who redshirted last year, finished in the top 20 at the NCAA Regional Championships in 2013. Other strong competitors include senior Andrea Chavez and junior Jessica Sams.
Utah also has a new face on the coaching staff, with Mackenzie Wartenberger joining the Utes. A former standout at California (2005-09), she previously coached at Radford and UNC Charlotte.
Kepler is in his 11th season at Utah.
The Utes kick off their season at the Utah State Open on Sept. 5. Utah hosts the Utah Open on Sept. 11.
