SALT LAKE CITY -
The 2016 Utah gymnastics schedule was released today with the announcement of the Pac-12 Network schedule and the two-time defending Pac-12 champion Utes will make nine network appearances.
Utah's nonconference regular-season schedule features home meets against BYU (Jan. 8) and Georgia (Mar. 12), and road meets at Southern Utah (Jan. 15) and Michigan (Mar. 4). Utah's meets against BYU and Georgia will both be televised live on Pac-12 Network, as will all six of its Pac-12 Conference competitions and the Pac-12 Championship.
To accommodate live television coverage on the Pac-12 Network, the Utes will host a Monday meet on Feb. 1 vs. Arizona. While Utah has hosted 80 Monday meets in its history, there have been just five Monday meets in the Huntsman Center in the last 20 years, most recently in 2006 against Georgia. The rest of Utah's 2016 dual meets drew Friday and Saturday dates. The Saturday, Jan. 23 meet against Oregon State, with a start time of 3 p.m., is believed to be the first regular-season home meet matinee in school history.
The Huntsman Center is site of the 2016 NCAA Salt Lake City Regional on Saturday, Apr. 2. Utah has not hosted a regional since 2012. The NCAA Championships will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, for the second-straight year, on Apr. 15-17.
Utah returns nine letterwinners and five All-Americans from last season's NCAA runner-up. Back for the Utes are seniors Kailah Delaney, Breanna Hughes, Haley Lange and Kassandra Lopez; junior Baely Rowe and sophomores Kari Lee, Tiffani Lewis, Samantha Partyka and Maddy Stover. Four freshmen will make their Ute debuts this season in Shannon McNatt, MaKenna Merrell, Erika Muhaw and Sabrina Schwab.
The program is under a new coaching tandem with Megan Marsden and Tom Farden serving as co-head coaches. Longtime coach Greg Marsden retired last April after leading Utah to a record 40-consecutive national gymnastics championship appearances.
Megan Marsden begins her seventh season as the co-head coach and her 32nd season overall, while Farden--a former head coach at Southeast Missouri State--spent the last five seasons as Utah's assistant coach.
Season tickets for the nation's attendance leader are on sale now at UtahUtes.com or by calling 801-581-UTIX. Utah broke its own national gymnastics attendance record last year by leading all women's sports with a home meet attendance average of 14,950. It marked the 31st gymnastics attendance title and the fifth all-women's sports attendance title for the Utes.
Fans will get their first chance to see the 2016 Utes at the annual Red Rocks Preview on Friday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Center. Admission to the popular event is free.
