SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah cross country team is set to host its third annual Utah Open on Friday Sept. 11. The men's 6-km race is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. MT, followed by the women's 4-km at 3:25 at Murray Park [296 E Murray Park Ave., Murray, Utah].
"I am excited for the home meet," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We have a bunch of seniors in the group this year and it is their last opportunity to run in front of the home fans, in terms of cross country. We will be competing with Boise State, Utah Valley on the women's side and the men's race will be a dual meet between Utah Valley and Boise. I think we will also have some individual runners from some of the other local schools, but I don't believe they are going to bring full squads. The Murray Park course is really simple. It will start and finish on the upper field by the county ice rink. This meet will give us a chance to see some gals for the first time, and see others for the second time this season. We are kind of just training through these early season meets, but we are still going to get some quality efforts in and find out where we are at."
Competing for the Utes will be ten returning athletes and six freshmen. Redshirt senior Susannah Hurst Spencer will highlight this group after a strong performance last week at the Utah State Aggie Invitational. Hurst Spencer captured third overall at USU with a time of 18:01.40 in her first race after redshirting the 2014 season.
Another athlete to keep an eye out for on Friday is junior Jessica Sams, who will make her season debut. Sams finished 37th overall and was the second Ute to cross the line at the NCAA Regional Championships last season after recording a 6-km time of 22:14.75.
Admission is free to all fans.
Race results will be posted on utahutes.com on Friday evening.
