SAN FRANCISCO – The Utah men's basketball team has been picked eighth in the 2016-17 Pac-12 men's basketball preseason poll, the league office announced on Friday at Pac-12 Men's Basketball Media Day.

Voted on by 27 different media members that cover the league, Utah garnered 142 points in the poll.

The Utes, who return a pair of starters from last season's squad, are coming off a second-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth after posting a 27-9 record in 2015-16. Utah claimed second-place in the league standings and was the Pac-12 runner-up in the conference tournament. Head coach
Larry Krystkowiak, who enters his sixth season at the helm of the program, returns senior
Lorenzo Bonam and junior
Kyle Kuzma as starters from last season's team. Bonam averaged 10.2 points and 2.7 assists per game, while Kuzma registered 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for the Utes.

For the first time in league history, Oregon was chosen to win the league after receiving 23 first-place votes for a total of 320 points. Arizona received four first-place nods and 298 points for second, while UCLA (259 points), California (209 points) and Colorado (199 points) rounded out the top five.

Washington (167 points) and USC (163 points) came in just ahead of the Utes in sixth and seventh place, respectively, while Oregon State (122 points), Stanford (119 points), Arizona State (78 points) and Washington State (30 points) rounded out the entire poll.

The Pac-12 is coming off a historic 2015-16 season in which a league record seven teams earned
NCAA Tournament bids and nine teams finished in the RPI Top 100. The Pac-12 enters the 2016-17 season with three teams (No. 5 OREGON, No. 11 ARIZONA, No. 20 UCLA) in the USA Today Coaches Preseason Top 25, as well as a total of eight teams receiving votes in the poll.

Utah opens the 2016-17 season at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Saturday, Nov. 12, hosting Norwest Nazarene. Tip-off time is still TBD.
