AUSTIN, Texas—Utah gymnasts
Breanna Hughes and
Kailah Delaney were named today to the CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Team—Hughes to the first team and Delaney to the second team. The Academic All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The at-large Academic All-America team encompasses 16 NCAA sports.
Hughes, a five-time All-American with a 3.965 cumulative GPA, was the 2016 Pac-12 all-around and vault champion, the 2016 NCAA Regional all-around champion and the 2016 Pac-12 Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She has completed requirements for a bachelor's degree in human development and family studies and plans to take nursing prerequisites next year while also serving as a Utah gymnastics student coach. Hughes will complete a second bachelor's degree in health, society and policy in the spring of 2017.
Delaney, a three-time All-American, the 2016 NCAA Regional vault champion and the only four-time All-Pac-12 vaulter in Utah history, carries a 3.877 cumulative GPA. She has made the Pac-12 All-Academic team three times and has a bachelor's degree in health, society and policy.
Hughes becomes the sixth gymnast in school history to be honored as a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American. The others were Shannon Bowles (2002), Theresa Kulikowski (2002, 2003), Kristina Baskett (2009), Daria Bijak (2010) and
Georgia Dabritz (2016). Delaney is the fourth Utah gymnast ever to win second-team Academic All-America honors.
