BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – Three future Utah golfers and one former Ute rounded out play at the 2016 U.S. Amateur Championships at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield, Mich., this week.
Incoming transfer Kyler Dunkle reached the Round of 16, while former golfer
Brandon Kida reached the Round of 64. Incoming freshmen Jordan Costello and Mitchell Schow also competed in the event.
Kida earned a spot in the Round of 64 after finishing in a tie for 11th place during Monday and Tuesday's stroke play, with a two-round score of 2-under par (70-68=138). Kida posted a total of six birdies throughout his two rounds, which included four birdies in Tuesday's final round.
Dunkle qualified for the Round of 64 after tying for 41st overall with a two-day score of 1-over par (69-72=141). Dunkle managed to card a total of nine birdies throughout the first two rounds of stroke play.
Costello carded a two-day score of 15-over par (78-77=155), while Schow notched a 6-over par (71-75=146) in the tournament.
"I thought our guys played great," said Utah head coach
Garrett Clegg. "Kyler excelled the most, but this was also his second time competing in the U.S. Amateur. For two players that just graduated from high school, in Mitchell and Jordan, they managed to play great, as well. Mitchell had a great chance to make match play with nine holes to play and although Jordan struggled with his game, I thought he did a great job competing this week."
It was Ute vs. Ute in the Round of 64 as Kida and Dunkle faced each other on Wednesday. Kida opened winning the first two holes to go up by two, but Dunkle rebounded with a par on hole No. 5, while Kida bogeyed to drop a point. Kida got the point back on the very next hole, but Dunkle again came back to win hole No. 7 and get back to just one down of Kida.
Dunkle would later win four of the next five holes after the turn, and despite Kida winning holes No. 15 and 16, both players bogeyed the final hole and Dunkle came away with the win, one up on Kida.
Dunkle moved on to the Round of 32 on Thursday, where he faced Garrett Rank of Canada. Dunkle picked up the first point after recording a birdie on hole No. 3, but Rank came back to even the match at all-square with a birdie on hole No. 5. Dunkle later birdied No. 9 and pared No. 10 to go up by two and then after four consecutive holes at even, Dunkle went three up with a par at No. 14.
Rank countered with a par and birdie on holes No. 15 and 16, while Dunkle bogeyed both holes to see his lead shrink to just one up with two holes to play. The newest Ute managed to keep pace with Rank on the final two holes though and came away with the victory, one up over Rank and move on to the Round of 16, which would be played later that afternoon.
Dunkle's tournament came to an end after the Round of 16, where he fell 6 and 5 to USC's Jonah Texiera. Texiera opened the round winning three of the first four holes before Dunkle got a point back with a par on hole No. 5. Texiera posted an eagle and a birdie on the next two holes to go four up and never looked back.
"I was extremely impressed with Kyler's play," said Clegg. "When you look at this event, it all begins with over 1,000 players across the world attempting just to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship. The top 312 qualifiers then make it to Michigan and the field is later shrunk to just 64 golfers for match play. For Kyler to make it to the Round of 16 is a phenomenal accomplishment. I'm excited to have Kyler, Jordan and Mitchell joining our golf program this fall. It will be fun to see what we can accomplish together."
