BRDIGEPORT, W. Va. – The Utah men's golf team closed out fall action at the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for fourth place at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W. Va.
After second-round play was suspended on Monday evening due to darkness, Utah resumed the second round Tuesday morning and carded a 6-over par (294). Utah closed out the event shooting 6-under par (282) to give the Utes a three-round combined score of 5-over par (293-294-282=869).
"This was a weird tournament for us," said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "We had some really great moments, but we also had moments that weren't good for us. Overall, it was not the finish we were hoping for. It isn't terrible to finish fourth, but we didn't quite perform up to our standards and our ability."
Bowling Green State finished in first place, shooting even par (290-298-287=864) for the two-day event. West Virginia (+2) finished in second place and Rutgers University (+4) finished ahead of Utah in third place, while Eastern Kentucky (+5) finished in a tie with the Utes in fourth place.
James Madison (+8), Marshall (+11), University of Akron (+19), Towson (+23), and Seton Hall University (+24) rounded out the top-10 teams in the tournament.
Three Utes posted top-20 performances with sophomore
Jordan Costello leading the way after carding a combined score of 1-over par (70-73-74=217) to finish in a tie for 15
th place. Finishing in a tie for 19
th place, freshman
Tristan Mandur (75-71-72=218) and sophomore
Mitchell Schow (73-75-70=218) each registered combined scores of 2-over par.
During the third round, Mandur recorded a double-eagle on the eighth hole. Mandur sank his second shot with a five-iron on the par-five.
"In the ten years I have been coaching, I have never had any player get a double-eagle before," said Clegg. "It is so rare and you never hear about someone getting a double-eagle. Tristan's shot actually gave us a kick-start for a while there, but we just weren't able to get enough going for us."
Freshman
Blake Tomlinson placed in a tie for 24
th place after recording a combined score of 4-over par (75-75-70=220). Rounding out the Ute golfers, junior
Kyler Dunkle carded a combined score of 5-over par (76-75-70=221) to finish in a tie for 27
th place.
"It was weird for us to have all of our players so close in the standings and in a bunch. We didn't have that one guy step up for us this week and push us to the top like we have had in past weeks. All of our guys gave it their best effort, but we know we left a lot out there every round," said Clegg.
The Utah golf team will have a few months off from action before opening the spring season at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday, Feb. 15, through Saturday, Feb. 17. The three-day event will be held at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii.
