The Utes look to capture third consecutive bid to NCAA Championships.
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah cross country team heads North to Logan, Utah, to compete in the NCAA Mountain Regionals on Friday, Nov. 10. The six-kilometer race will take place at the Steve & Dona Reeder Cross Country Course and is set to begin at 10:15 a.m. (MT). The Utes will be looking to qualify for their third-straight NCAA Championship.
"We know we are probably in one of the top two in terms of challenging and difficult regions in the country in the Mountain Region, and we've got several ranked teams in the field with us," head coach Kyle Kepler explained. "We can definitely be on the outside looking in if we don't have our best day, so hopefully we can race very similar to how we ran at the conference championships."
Competing for the Utes will be seniors Grayson Murphy, Hannah McInturff, Louise Mercer, and Jessica Sams. Sophomores Poppy Tank and Amanda Gehrich will also compete as well as freshman Trina Moreno.
All eyes will be on Murphy, who has been outstanding this season for the Utes. In all three of Murphy's appearances this season, she has finished in the top five and is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships. McInturff and Tank earned all-region honors last year. Gehrich has consistently been among Utah's top three finishers this season.
"Hopefully we can put together our best effort of the year and get ourselves back to the NCAA meet for the third-straight year," Kepler said. "It's going to be a challenging task and like everybody you're just trying to get to the meet as healthy as you can and avoid some of the pit falls that can lead to not the best performances."
Utah will be competing against a field of 20 teams with five nationally ranked squads. The five ranked teams in the Mountain Region include No. 1 overall ranked Colorado, No. 2 New Mexico, No. 15 Utah State, No. 18 BYU, and No. 29 Northern Arizona. The Utes come into the meet ranked sixth in the Mountain Region by the latest poll released by the UTFCCCA.
NCAA selections will be announced on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1:00 p.m. MT on www.NCAA.org.
