Utes head into Tuesday's final round in second-place
PROVO, Utah – Utah freshman Jordan Costello sits in a tie for first-place after carding a combined score of 6-under par (68-70=138) following the first two rounds of play at the PING Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club in Provo on Monday.
Costello and the Utah men's golf team head into Tuesday's final round in second-place with a combined score of 10-under par (276-290=566). The Utes are just one shot back of BYU, who leads the tournament with a score of 11-under par (565). St. Mary's and Loyola Marymount are in a tie for third at 9-under par (567) and Santa Clara rounds out the top five with a score of 3-under par (573).
The Utes carded a 2016-17 season-low score of 12-under par (276) in the first round on Monday. The 276 strokes in a single-round matches the third-lowest 18-hole score in school history and is Utah's lowest score in a round since carding a 276 in first-round action at the Falcon Invitational back on Sept. 19, 2009.
Meanwhile, Costello carded back-to-back rounds under par for the third time this season. He registered rounds of 68 and 70, respectively, which marks his best consecutive 36 holes of golf on the season. The first-round score of 68 ties his previous career-low, which he tallied in the third round at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate back on Sept. 13, 2016.
Senior Gentry Hicks heads into Tuesday's final round in a tie for 10th-place after carding a score of 3-under par (69-72=141) over the first 36 holes. Freshman Mitchell Schow carded a 1-under par (68-75=143) and sits in a tie for 19th-place, while sophomore Nathan Wunderlii is tied for 26th-place with a two-round score of 1-over par (71-74=145).
Sophomore Kyler Dunkle rounds out Utah's team scoring and sits in a tie for 46th-place with a score of 6-over par (76-74=150). Freshman Peyton Hastings, who played as an individual for the Utes, sits in a tie for 19th-place with a two-round score of 1-under par (70-73=143). Hastings is the second-lowest individual heading into Tuesday's final round, just two shots back of Santa Clara's Hassan Said (-3, 141).
Utah will close out play tomorrow, teeing off from the No. 1 tee at Riverside Country Club, beginning at 10:20 a.m. Live scoring for Tuesday's final round can be found here.
