SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah men's tennis will open its first weekend of home matches for PAC-12 conference play this Friday and Sunday at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes will match up against the 23
rd ranked Oregon Ducks on Friday at 3 p.m. MST, followed by a match on Sunday against the Washington Huskies (11-6) at 1 p.m. MST.
Utah Notes
The Utes are coming off their first weekend of PAC-12 conference play, falling to 9
th ranked Cal and 22
nd ranked Stanford, with this the Utah men's tennis team is 0-2 in conference play. Against Cal, the Bears got up early earning the doubles point to go up 1-0 on the Utes. The doubles team of Bjorn Hoffman and J.T. Nishimura defeated
Santiago Sierra and
Joe Woolley on court No. 2, with a final score of 6-3. Then at the No. 3 doubles position, Filip Bergevi and Nico Brightbill defeated
Parker McGuiness and
Slava Shainyan 6-2, to get the point for the Bears.
In singles,
David Micevski was defeated 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 position to Andre Goransson, along with
Santiago Sierra also falling short at the No. 2 position, losing 6-2, 6-1, to Billy Griffith. J.T. Nishimura then capped things off for the Bears at the No. 5 spot, defeating
Joe Woolley 6-3, 6-3, giving Cal the victory. Against Stanford in doubles action, the team of
Santiago Sierra and Joe
Woolley was defeated by William
Genesen and
Sameer Kumar at the No. 2 spot, with a score of 6-4. Then to card the doubles point for Stanford, Parker
McGuiness and
Slava Shainyan were defeated with a final score of 6-3 at the No. 3 position by Brandon Sutter and David
Wilczynski. At the No. 1 position in singles, David
Micevski fell to Tom Fawcett 6-2, 6-1, along with Joe
Woolley carding a loss against Brandon Sutter at the No. 5 position, with a final score of 6-4, 6-1. Parker
McGuiness was then defeated by David
Wilczynski at the No. 3 position to give the Cardinal the win, with a final score of 6-2, 6-2.
Opponent Notes
The Oregon Ducks are coming off of a 4-3 loss to the UCLA Bruins, the 10
th ranked team in the nation. With this, the Ducks have started Pac-12 play 0-2, but put together gritty performances against a pair of top-10 teams in No. 5 USC and No. 10 UCLA and proved that they have the talent and the depth to play with the top talent in the nation. Oregon is now lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season. The Ducks (14-4, 0-2 Pac-12) were forced to fight back from an early deficit after dropping the doubles point for the second time in as many days. The Bruins (13-4, 2-0 Pac-12) claimed wins on the top two courts to clinch the point and take an early 1-0 lead. In singles, UCLA extended its lead to 2-0 as the Bruins' Austin Rapp edged junior Cormac Clissold on No. 5, 6-1, 6-3. 39th-ranked Martin Redlicki (UCLA) put the Bruins within a point of clinching the match, 3-0, with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over junior Simon Stevens on the second court. The Ducks then began to mount a furious comeback. Junior Akihiro Tanaka continued to play well for the Ducks, earning a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win on No. 3 over Evan Zhu (UCLA) to put Oregon on the board. Freshman Ty Gentry pulled UO within a point, 3-2, on No. 6 with a gritty performance, edging out UCLA's Maxime Cressy, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Perhaps the match of the day came on the top court, where the Ducks' Thomas Laurent, ranked 40th in the nation, faced off against No. 11 Gage Brymer (UCLA). Laurent, who has been tremendous in singles all season, edged Brymer, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-1, to tie the match at 3-3. The deciding point came down to No. 4, where senior Jayson Amos took on UCLA's Logan Staggs. After dropping the first set, 7-6 (3), Amos mounted a comeback with a thrilling 7-6 (5) win in the second. With the match on the line, Staggs was able to edge Amos, 6-4, to secure the victory for the Bruins.
The Washington Huskies are coming off of a 6-1 loss to No. 5 USC. The Huskies dropped the doubles point to begin the match, beginning with Jake Douglas and Piers Foley falling to the 22nd ranked doubles pair in the country. The Trojans claimed the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court two, while the match on court three was suspended. USC opened up singles by claiming the first set on each court, and eventually claimed wins on courts one and two to take a 3-0 lead. The clinching fourth point was won on court four, with Gal Hakak falling to Jack Jaede 6-2, 6-4. Amit Batta and Piers Foley dropped their matches on courts five and six, giving the Trojans a 6-0 lead on Washington. The remaining match on court three began with No. 47 Logan Smith coming out on top of a close first set over Douglas 7-5. However, the junior from Rolling Hills, Calif. bounced back in the second set 6-1, and continued to roll into the tie-breaker, winning his match 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7).
