MIAMI - Utah swimming and diving opens the 2018 calendar year at the FIU Sprint Invitational on Friday afternoon. The day begins with the first heats of the 50 back at noon from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.

Utah and 11 other teams will get together for this unique and ultra-competitive event, featuring sprint distances, with other events sprinkled in between rounds.

All teams can enter swimmers in any sprint event, with the goal of posting a top-eight time, and advancing through three tournament races to be declared the individual champion. The top eight times advance to a quarterfinal swim in that event later in the meet.

The top eight quarterfinal times in each event will swim a single race together to eliminate half of that field for a semifinal swim later in the day.

As a buffer between quarters and semis, the teams will offer individuals for the 100 fly, 100 free and 100 back for one timed swim.

The semifinals advance the top two swimmers for a final race for the event title. The sprint finals begin after a 500 free with enough heats to satisfy all entries.

The finals are a one-on-one swim. The women's and men's finals alternate until a sprint champ in each event is crowned. These are the only swims of the sprint events for the day where touching the wall first merits recognition.

The day concludes with a round of 100 breast heats and a 200 free relay, women then men.
