SAN FRANCISCO—The 2019 Utah gymnastics schedule released today by the Pac-12 Conference is notable for its home matinees, neutral site podium meets and new postseason format.
Including the Red Rocks Preview on Dec. 7, the Utes will make seven live television appearances on the Pac-12 Networks. In addition, all Utah home meets and postseason competitions will be broadcast live on ESPN 700 radio.
An exciting home schedule features defending NCAA champion UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m. Also visiting the Huntsman Center in 2019 are Penn State (Jan. 5), Arizona (Feb. 1), California (Feb. 9) and Michigan (Mar. 2). All but the Arizona meet are Saturday matinees.
For the first time, the Utes will compete on podium—where the apparatus are on raised platforms—twice during the regular season. The first podium meet is the Mardi Gras Invitational in St. Charles, Mo., on Feb. 15 against LSU, Missouri and Stanford. The Pac-12 Championship on Mar. 23 in West Valley City, Utah, will also feature a podium setup. TThe Pac-12 awarded a three-year contract to the Maverik Center to allow for a neutral site and a podium setup for its championship. The NCAA Championships are also conducted on podium.
"Our schedule will provide us many opportunities to test our team against national powerhouse programs," said Utah co-head coach
Tom Farden. "We think our fans will be really excited about our home schedule, which features some excellent Pac-12 teams—including the defending national champion—as well as two of the premier teams in the Big Ten. This is the first time in our history that we will get on podium twice before the championship season, which is critical to achieving our goals. Holding our Pac-12 Championship at a neutral venue in the Maverik Center is a win for our conference, as well as our loyal fans in the Salt Lake valley."
The NCAA Championships is moving to an eight-team field and a four-team final ("Four on the Floor") in 2019, eliminating the bye rotations that were necessary from 1982-2018 when 10-12 teams qualified. The 2019 NCAA semifinals are on Apr. 19 and the championship is on Saturday, Apr. 20 in Ft. Worth, Texas.
While fewer teams will qualify into nationals, 36 teams will still participate in regionals, which has grown from a one-day, six-team meet to three days and four sessions. Round one of regionals features a dual meet "play in" on Apr. 4 with the winner joining seven automatic qualifiers in the second round on Apr. 5. The top two teams in each second-round semifinal will compete in the regional final on Saturday, Apr. 6. The winner and runner-up from all four regionals will move on to the NCAA Championships in Ft. Worth. Regional sites are Ann Arbor, Mich., Athens, Ga., Baton Rouge, La., Corvallis, Ore.
Utah returns five All-Americans, including two-time NCAA champion
MyKayla Skinner, from last year's fifth-place NCAA finisher. Skinner enters her junior season as one of the most decorated gymnasts in NCAA and Pac-12 history. All-America seniors
Kari Lee and
MaKenna Merrell-Giles will co-captain a team that lost just four routines from a year ago while returning 10 letterwinners. New to the team are freshmen
Hunter Dula,
Cammy Hall,
Cristal Isa and
Adrienne Randall.
Season tickets are on sale now at UtahTickets.com or by calling 801-581-UTIX. The Ute gymnasts led all NCAA women's sports in attendance last season, averaging 15,139 a meet. It was their eighth all-sports women's attendance title and their 34th gymnastics attendance crown.
