SALT LAKE CITY – The 2018 Utah volleyball schedule is highlighted this upcoming season with three different pre-season tournaments, 14 home contests and a total of 16 televised matches, Utah head coach
Beth Launiere announced this week.
Overall, Utah will match-up with 22 different teams this upcoming season, with 12 of those teams coming off NCAA Tournament appearances in 2017.
The Utes, who are coming off a 24-10 overall record in 2017, will open the 2018 campaign at home, hosting the Utah Volleyball Classic. Alongside Utah in the tournament will be UC Irvine, St. Mary's and Denver. The Utes open the two-day event on Friday, Aug. 24, hosting UC Irvine, which will be played at 7 p.m. MT inside the Huntsman Center. Utah will close out the tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday, Aug. 25, taking on St. Mary's in a noon match-up and then hosting Denver in the finale.
Utah will hit the road for the first time in 2018 the following weekend, with a trip to Missoula, Mont., to compete in the Montana Invitational. The Utes will open against tournament host Montana on Friday, Aug. 31 and will take on Gonzaga later that evening. Utah wraps up the tournament facing Big 12 foe, Iowa State, on Saturday, Sept. 1.
Utah rounds out its pre-season tournament schedule with three matches at the Villanova Invitational, which runs Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8. The Utes will face Villanova in the opener that Friday, before closing out competition against Temple and High Point that Saturday.
Utah will close out the non-conference campaign against a pair of local rivals, first taking on BYU in Provo on Thursday, Sept. 13, and then returning home to host Utah Valley on Friday, Sept. 14.
In 11 non-conference matches, Utah will face four different squads that earned a bid into last season's NCAA Tournament (Denver, Iowa State, High Point and BYU).
"Our non-conference schedule is a mix of traditional opponents, as well as a few programs we have not played as often," said Launiere. "The common denominator is that they are all quality programs and will prepare us well for the rigors of a tough Pac-12 schedule."
Utah will have to open Pac-12 play on the road this season, as the Utes travel to Boulder, Colo., to take on Colorado on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The Utes return home to host UCLA on Friday, Sept. 21, which will mark the only contest between the Utes and Bruins this season. Utah returns to the road the following week to take on both Washington State (Sept. 28) and Washington (Sept. 30).
Utah will open the first two weeks of October with four straight matches at the Huntsman Center. The Utes, who went 12-4 at home last season, will first take on the Bay Area squads, hosting Stanford (Oct. 5) and California (Oct. 7), and then taking on the Oregon schools that following week, meeting up with Oregon State (Oct. 11) and Oregon (Oct. 14).
A road trip to the desert to take on Arizona State (Oct. 19) and Arizona (Oct. 21), is followed by a pair of home contests against Washington State (Oct. 24) and Washington (Oct. 26), giving Utah a total of six home matches in the month of October.
Utah will be forced to play five of its final eight matches of the regular season on the road though, as the Utes travel to the Bay Area to face California (Nov. 2) and Stanford (Nov. 4) the very first week of November. Followed by a pair of matches against Arizona (Nov. 9) and Arizona State (Nov. 11), Utah hits the road for three straight the following two weeks, taking on Oregon (Nov. 14), Oregon State (Nov. 16) and USC (Nov. 21).
Utah will have the luxury of wrapping of the 2018 season at home, hosting Colorado the Friday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 23).
"The Pac-12 Conference schedule is going to be the normal gauntlet of nationally ranked opponents," said Launiere. "I believe it will be as competitive as it's ever been with all 12 teams battling, night-in and night-out".
Along with its match against BYU televised on BYUtv, Utah will also have 15 of its 20 Pac-12 Conference matches televised on the Pac-12 Network this season, for a total of 16 televised matches.
Utah's first six Pac-12 matches and 11 of its first 12 matches overall will be aired on the Pac-12 Network. Home matches scheduled to be televised live include: UCLA (Nov. 21), Stanford (Oct. 5), California (Oct. 7), Oregon (Oct. 14), Washington State (Oct. 24), Washington (Oc. 26) and Colorado (Nov. 23). Away matches scheduled to be televised include: at Colorado (Sept. 19), at Washington State (Sept. 28), at Washington (Sept. 30), at Arizona State (Oct. 19), at Arizona (Oct. 21), at Stanford (Nov. 4), at Oregon (Nov. 14) and at Oregon State (Nov. 21).
Utah Volleyball fans can get an up-close look at the team prior to the regular season, when the team hosts its annual Red/White Scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 18.
Utah went 24-10 overall and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Utes won the Salt Lake City Regional, picking up wins over Cleveland State and Purdue, to earn the program's third trip to the Sweet 16 overall and first since 2008. The Utes finished the season ranked No. 11 in the final AVCA Top-25 poll, which marks the program's highest final ranking in school history.
