OGDEN - Ireland Dunn's
first career goal opened the scoring before a late tally from Paola van der Veen
sealed a 2-0 win at Weber State.
"It feels really exciting to get that first goal," Dunn said. "It really helped lift the pressure off of me and I just think a weight has come off my shoulders. I have been working really hard and it is great to see all of that pay off."
Dunn sliced her way through the Wildcat defense in the 15th
minute and with the first Utah shot, put her side in front, 1-0. Holly Daugirda
, who registered the eighth assist of her career, played her through on goal.
"I thought our energy was really good from the onset," Dunn added. "It was a little chaotic at first but we took advantage of the opportunities we created this evening."
"It was a great team effort tonight to get our first win of the season," head coach Rich Manning
said. "Road wins are hard to come by and the team managed the environment well. I thought our attack got better as the game progressed and once we finally calmed the game down, we were able to get more people forward. It was great to see Ireland get her first goal."
Utah had a chance to double the lead before the break when freshman Makayla Christensen
blasted one off the crossbar. Weber State also hit the frame in the early going and Carly Nelson
made a nice diving save on a central direct free kick just outside the penalty area. She finished with three saves to register the sixth shutout of her career
"We played an excellent defensive game overall," Manning added. "I thought our backs and Carly in goal were tremendous. In the second half, we created a second goal with some good defending and a quick counter. I was impressed with Weber State and think they will have a successful season. I am looking forward to another good week of training and then head back on the road for two games next weekend."
The visitors in black continued to create chances as Haylee Cacciacarne
headed wide from a corner and WSU goalkeeper Nikki Pittman held Kristin Fairbairn's
try. Brooklyn James
showed off her speed, burning past a Wildcat defender on the near sideline before Pittman claimed her attempt in the second half.
The Utes continued to send in cross after cross and Van der Veen had a handful of tries before sealing the win in the 81st
minute, sliding home a nice cutback from Hailey Skolmoski
. For Van der Veen
, it was the 11th
goal of her career and Skolmoski
now has 49 points for her career.
The Utes remain in the state and on the road for a contest at Utah State on Friday. Kick-off vs. the Aggies in Logan will be at 4 p.m.
