The University of Utah women's basketball team is set to tip off the 2019-20 season in 15 days, starting with an exhibition game on Thursday, Oct. 31 against Westminster. The game will start at 11 a.m. MT.
With a new season comes new faces, including true freshman Kemery Martín, a local star out of Corner Canyon High School in Sandy, Utah. Martín was a four-time all-state selection, earning Ms. Basketball as a senior, and was also the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year.
Q: What is your earliest memory of basketball and what was special about that moment?
A: "Getting my first pair of basketball shoes. They were blue and black Nikes and I thought they were so cool. Looking back they were pretty ugly."
Q: What was it like growing up in your hometown? Any specific memories that stand out?
A: "Utah is my hometown so it's great!"
Q: How has your family influenced you on and off the court?
A: "My dad always put so much time and effort into helping my siblings and I become the players we are today, and my mom always told us that if we put time and effort into what we love the reward will be great in the end. So, that motivated us to keep working each day."
Q: Who would you say you take after most in your family and why?
A: "Probably my grandpa Larry. He is a laid back guy but loves to laugh and joke around. He is also someone I strive to be like because he is the most selfless person I know."
Q: What about the sport of basketball made you fall in love with it?
A: Probably the creativeness. There are so many different ways to play the game, and endless knowledge that you can learn from so many people that play. It's just fun to be able to play and create your own craft as well as play against different types of players and teams."
Q: Was there ever a time that you thought college basketball wouldn't be in your future? If so, what made you change your mind?
A: "No playing in college was always the goal."
Q: What is your dream job and why?
A: "Honestly I've never had one."
Q: What is something people might not know about you?
A: "I turned down a big modeling career because I like basketball better. And I like to draw."
Q: What about the University of Utah made you want to continue your career here?
A: "Definitely the people here. Being from Utah, I am aware of the type of community that's here and I love it! I also believe the vision that coach Roberts has for this program and it's definitely something I want to be apart of."
Q: What has been your favorite part about playing basketball at Utah so far?
A: "My teammates. I love all of them and I'm so excited to get out there on the court with them and do big things this year!"
