SALT LAKE CITY – The preseason No. 5-ranked Utah gymnastics program has announced a home-and-home series with defending national champion Oklahoma and 2019 NCAA runner-up LSU, starting in 2021 against the Sooners.
While all three programs regularly compete for the NCAA title, not since 1992 have Utah and Oklahoma met in the regular season and Utah's last dual meet against LSU fell in 2003.
The series with Oklahoma begins next season in Norman, with the Sooners returning the visit to Salt Lake City in 2022. Utah and LSU will compete in Baton Rouge in 2022 and in the Huntsman Center in 2023.
"These are exciting contracts with two premier gymnastics programs," said Utah head coach
Tom Farden. "Competing against OU and LSU in the regular season is a great opportunity for our team and fans to see teams we typically don't see until nationals. The atmosphere inside the Huntsman Center in 2022 and '23 will be electric."
Oklahoma has won three of the past four NCAA titles and was the NCAA runner-up in 2018. LSU has finished as the national runner-ups in 2016, 2017, and most recently 2019, while Utah is the only program in the country to qualify into every NCAA Championship and boasts a record-tying 10 national titles and five runner-up finishes, most recently in 2015.
Dates of the meets will be announced at a later date.
