SALT LAKE CITY – The future is looking bright for the University of Utah women's basketball program as future Utes Brynna Maxwell and Kemery Martín rack up the postseason awards for their respective high school teams.
Martín was named Ms. Basketball for the state of Utah after earning her fourth straight all-state honor while Maxwell was named the 3A state player of the year in Washington. The duo will head to Salt Lake City this fall to be on the 2019-20 Utah women's basketball roster.
Martín, a local out of Corner Canyon High School, was also named the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging close to 22 points per game as a senior. The Sandy, Utah, native has been a star in the state of Utah since she started her high school career at Alta and is a two-time all-region and all-USA Utah Girls Basketball Team selection by USA Today.
As a junior, Martín averaged 20.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game, leading Corner Canyon to its Region Championship. She was ranked the No. 35 recruit in the country on ProspectsNation.com and was a five-star recruit on ESPN.com.
Maxwell was also named the Tacoma Tribune All-Area Player of the Year as a senior, becoming Gig Harbor High School's all-time leading scorer in a career, in a season and in a game. She led her team to a state championship and set state tournament records in total points (83), average (27.7) and tied for field goals made (28).
The Gig Harbor, Washington, native has earned multiple all-conference and all-area selections during her high school career along with being a top-100 recruit with a four-star rating. As a junior, she led Gig Harbor to its first-ever state championship and was named the Tacoma Athletic Commission Athlete of the Year.
