SAN FRANCISCO – Sophomore
Russell Benkaim has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week, it was announced today by the league office.Â
It is Benkaim's first Pac-12 Player of the Week nomination of his career and the Utes' second of the season with
Dan Little winning in February. Benkaim is Utah's fifth player to earn the honor, joining Little,
Parker McGuiness, Slim Hanza and Ben Tasevac.
Benkaim is 10-2 in singles play and 7-6 in doubles this season and is in integral part in Utah holding a 12-3 record this year. The Utes are coming off another set of wins this past week, including a 4-0 sweep of No. 40 Old Dominion.Â
Benkaim got things started against Old Dominion, beating Nicola Vidal on court four, 6-4, 6-1. He also teamed up with
Joe Woolley in doubles, winning 6-2 on the No. 3 court.Â
Against Denver, the Boca Raton, Fla. native earned another doubles win with Woolley on court three (6-1) before racking up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ignatius Castelino on the No. 4 court in singles.Â
Benkaim is currently on a five-match win streak in singles play and hasn't lost a set since Feb. 17.Â
Benkaim and the Utes return to action this week when they host UCLA (Friday, March 8 – 4 p.m.) and USC (Saturday, March 9 – 2 p.m.) to open up Pac-12 competition.Â
