SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – With the first round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate complete, the Utah Men's golf team finished the day shooting 4-under par (276). The team is in ninth overall and in strong position to climb the leaderboard after having two players finish in the top 20.
"We got off to a slow start and we were two over par through nine holes," head coach Garett Clegg explained. "We played a lot better on the final nine holes. There is a lot of golf remaining and we will hopefully play better the next couple of rounds."
Senior
Mitchell Schow leads the Ute's after carding 3-under par (67). Schow is tied for 15
th place following the first round of action.
"It was great to see Mitchell shoot three under par," Clegg said. "He hit the ball incredibly well today."
In his first tournament of the season, junior
Blake Tomlinson impressed early shooting 2-under par (68). Tomlinson finished tied for 20
th on the day and also recorded the first eagle of the Ute's season on hole 17.
"Blake struggled early in the round but made a strong comeback on the back nine," Clegg said.
Junior
Tristan Mandur finished the day shooting even (70) tying him for 42
nd overall. Mandur was another Ute who started slow but really got going on the back nine. He shot 2-under on the final 9 holes of the course to help himself rise amongst the competition.
Senior
Jordan Costello finished the round with an 18-hole score of 1-over (71), placing him in a tie for 49
th amongst the field. Rounding out the team was true freshmen
Jesper von Reedtz who carded 2-over (72) to finish tied for 57
th on the day.
At the Mea Lakakila Individual, the Ute's had a strong day with two out of three players finishing in the top 10. Redshirt freshman
Oscar Maxfield and true freshman
Javier Barcos are both tied for ninth overall after shooting 1-over (73) on the day. Sophomore
Axel Einarsson currently sits in 34
th after carding 12-over.
Einarsson will tee off the second round on Saturday, Sept. 14
th at 8:11 a.m. MT. Maxfield and Barcos will tee off at 9:39 a.m. MT the same day as well.
