INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – The Utah men's golf season is underway as the Utes take on the 2019 Gopher Invitational, finishing in eighth place after the first 36 holes of the tournament at the Windsong Farm Golf Club.
Utah's five-man team combined to shoot 6-over par (574) in the first two rounds. In the opening round, the team carded 9-over par (293) but came back and rallied to shoot 3-under par in the afternoon for the second round (281). Â
Leading the Utes is junior
Tristan Mandur, who is tied for fifth (-3, 139). Mandur carded an even par round in the first round and improved to 3-under par in the second round.
"Tristan made a double bogey on his first hole and then was fantastic from there on out," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "Whenever he had a bad hole, he followed it up with a birdie."
In his first collegiate tournament, true freshmen
Jesper von Reedtz is tied for ninth after shooting even par in the first round and -2 in the second (-2, 140).
"What a great start for Jasper," Clegg explained. "It isn't easy to start your college career at a big golf course in tough conditions and he hit the ball great all day."
Senior
Mitchell Schow finished tied for 42
nd after shooting 5-over par (147). Rounding out the team were sophomore Axel Eniarsson and true freshmen
Javier Barcos who, finished tied for 46
th (148) and 61
st (151) respectively.
At the Pioneer Creek Collegiate tournament, also in Minnesota, redshirt freshmen
Oscar Maxfield and seniors
Jordan Costello and
Peyton Hastings competed as individuals in three rounds.
Costello finished 6-under par (210) which tied him for fourth in the tournament after all three rounds. Maxfield finished tied for 37
th with a score of 6-over par (222) while Hastings shot 8-over par (224), which was good for 40
th amongst the field. Â
"Jordan played really well," Clegg said. "It's a great opportunity for him to compete in a tournament."
The Utes will wrap up the Gopher Invitational tomorrow with the final 18 holes early Monday morning. Barcos tees off at 7:15 a.m. CT with the rest of the Utes following closely after him. Live stats and results for todays and tomorrows tournament play can be found on
