Huntley, Paulo, Penisini Ready for East-West Shrine Bowl Saturday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Three former University of Utah football players are set to compete for the West squad in the 95th East-West Shrine Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 18. The game will take place at Tropicana Field with a 1 p.m. MT kick time.
Quarterback Tyler Huntley, offensive lineman Darrin Paulo and defensive tackle John Penisini are all gearing up this week to show off their talents to scouts, coaches and fans from across the country. The game will be broadcast live on the NFL Network with fans also able to listen in on the radio (Sirius XM NFL Channel 88).

The Utes' journey to Florida started on Saturday when they arrived in St. Petersburg for check-in to get their measurements taken prior to starting practice on Monday. Before hitting the gridiron, the former college athletes took in some community service by visiting the Shriners Hospital for Children on Sunday afternoon.

The first practice took place on Monday with Huntley, Paulo and Penisini impressing the crowd early. The Utes also took on practices with the West Team on Tuesday and will have practice today along with a Thursday afternoon practice to wrap up the week prior to Saturday's game.

Utah's three players along with the rest of the West squad will do a meet-and-greet as part of the East-West Shrine Bowl Player experience on Friday afternoon at Tropicana Field. It is a chance for fans to meet the teams, NFL coaches and the NFL Legend Team Captains for each team.

Pac-12 All-Conference first-team selection as a senior in 2019 … three-year starter on the offensive line for the Utes … played in 53 career games, including 41 on the offensive line with 40 starts … three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection … started all 14 games at left tackle in 2019 after playing dominantly at the right tackle position his previous years with the Utes … was an integral part in helping the Utes to finish the 2019 season ranked first in the Pac-12 in rushing offense (201.4 yards per game) … Utah also wrapped up this season ranked fourth in the FBS and first in the Pac-12 in passes had intercepted (4) … started in 13 games in both the 2018 and 2017 seasons, leading the team in snaps in 2017.
John Penisini | Defensive Tackle | West Jordan, Utah
Two-time second-team All-Pac-12 selection, earning the distinction in 2018 and 2019 … played in 40 games with 22 starts as a Ute after transferring from Snow College for the 2017 season … finished second on the team among defensive linemen with 38 tackles (7.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks), adding a pass breakup and two forced fumbles … earned Pac-12 Defensive Lineman of the Week after tying his career-high in tackles with seven in Utah's win over Washington in 2019, also recording a forced fumble … played in 14 games in 2018 with eight starts, finishing the year with 38 tackles (7.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks) … set his career-high in tackles against Northern Illinois in 2018 with seven.
