Junior Andy Torres has been key in Utah's offensive production from the inside to the three-point-line the last two seasons and is eager to get her junior campaign underway. The Terrebonne, Quebec, native has played in 61 games for the Utes, starting 26.
UtahUtes.com caught up with Torres to chat about her favorite road trips, how she plans to improve this season, and why she loves living in Utah.
Q: Â What was it like getting to move into a starting role as a sophomore last season?
A: It was amazing, the fact that I was starting in my sophomore year made me more confident in myself and it also helped me a lot to take my place in the team, as a leader, and having the support of my coaches was amazing.
Q: What was your favorite game from the last season and why?
A: BYU and Arizona State. First time actually playing against BYU was a blast, it was the first time that we all played for each other and competed until the very last second of the game. We showed character, our freshmen helped us a lot and every shot, every stop and every assist were celebrated by the fans and our bench. I still remember the feeling that we felt after the game and because we were so happy, we sprayed all of our water bottles on Coach Roberts. And the second game this year that left me speechless was against Arizona State. My freshman year, we lost both times against them at the very last second which was the worst feeling, so being able to beat them on our court and not letting them come back was amazing.
Q: What is something you want to improve on this next season?
A: I would like to expand my game more, by attacking more to the basket, get more offensive rebounds and continuing to shoot the ball.
Q: What was your favorite road trip from the last two seasons and why?
A: I would have to say the road trip to BYU's game last season, especially on our way back, our bus scratched another truck on the road, so we had to wait at least two hours in the bus. But we all decided to do a karaoke concert by signing our favorite songs and actually performed it. Even though it was long, that passed the time really fast. Also, I love every road trip when we win both games, it is always a nice feeling in the plane to just goof around with our teammates and coaches.
Q: Entering your junior year, how do you plan to step up into more of a leadership role with the team?
A: I will definitely keep my goofy and smiling side even though now I am going to be a leader, because I think it is important for everyone to have fun even though we compete every single day. It is nice to finish practice, laugh as a team, and keep the freshmen motivated if practice was harder than other days. Also, since last year I was kind of a leader, I will keep encouraging my teammates, help them with some points during the game and practices, and be a good example on the court.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing in the Pac-12?
A: The fact that we are playing against amazing teams, which makes us better every single time we play. Also, for a little Canadian and having the opportunity to play in California, Nevada, Arizona and Oregon is amazing.
Q: How would you describe your style of play in just three words?
A: Smart, Reliable and Efficient
Q: Who is your favorite professional basketball player and why?
A: My favorite player was Kobe Bryant, he was just an all-around player, he could attack, dunk, shoot and not be afraid to compete. Always asking the best from his teammates and he was always giving 100-percent every game. Even though he was guarding amazing players, he wasn't afraid to show them how it is truly done.
Q: What has been your favorite part about living in Utah?
A: The mountains, the temperature and the fact that I am away from home. It gave me more independence, which is nice. I also love the fact that I live close to all my friends because it is always nice to spend time with them.
Q: What do you plan to study at the U. and why?
A: Sociology and psychology. I wanted to be a social worker, but now I want to be a basketball coach and maybe a sport psychologist. I love to work with kids and I have been coaching for a while and I just love it, also it would keep me connected to the game that I love.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing at the U. so far? Â
A: The fans are just so amazing, every time I step on the court, I feel supported and loved by all the people that are in the stands, and the feeling of making good plays is just amazing.Â
