SAN FRANCISCO – Utah junior
Russell Benkaim was named the Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week after leading the Utes to a 3-0 weekend at the Eccles Tennis Center, which included an upset over then-ranked No. 23 Iowa.
Benkaim posted a 5-0 record over the weekend to lead the Ute men's tennis team. He played an instrumental role in the win over Iowa, as well as the doubleheader the next day to see Utah remain 10-0 in home matches this season.
The Bradenton, Fla. native opened his weekend of play by winning the doubles point for Utah against then-ranked No. 23 Iowa with partner
Randy Cory. After the doubles matches were tied 1-1, No. 54-ranked Benkaim and Cory downed the nation's No. 10 duo from Iowa to win the doubles point in the No. 1 spot. Benkaim then would go on to defeat his opponent in the No. 2 singles position in a three-set thriller to help push Utah in the 4-3 upset over the Hawkeyes by having a hand in two of the team points.
Benkaim then moved to the top singles and doubles spots for Utah in the 7-0 sweeps against Montana State and Southern Utah where he would go 3-0, while also leading in the doubles match that was unfinished. Against Montana State, Benkaim and Cory picked up their ninth straight win as a pair and are now 10-3 in spring play. Benkaim also won both of his singles matches on court one to wrap up his undefeated weekend. He has won eight of his last nine singles matches.
This marks Benkaim's second weekly honor of his career. Benkaim earned the other award during his sophomore campaign last season.
Benkaim and the Utes will be back in action this Saturday, Feb. 29 against Loyola Marymount and Northern Arizona. The matches will be played at 12 p.m. MT and 5 p.m. MT, respectively.
