BANDON, Ore. – The University of Utah golf program stayed consistent today in high winds at the Bandon Dunes Championship, shooting 6-under as a team in the third round to place fifth overall in the tournament.
The Utes sat in a tie for 10
th place after the first day, but rallied back in the final round with four players shooting under par. Utah finished the tournament shooting 8-over as a team (860).
"To have four guys shoot under par in the conditions today was really amazing," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "The weather started out calm, then after about nine holes the wind really picked up, but the guys stayed rock solid. We were really at our best when the conditions were the worst, and that is a huge confidence builder for the team."
Utah's top team finisher for the tournament was junior
Tristan Mandur, who shot 1-under in the final round (70) and even for the tournament (213), to finish tied for 12
th overall. Mandur's top-15 finish was his third of the season.
Junior
Blake Tomlinson was outstanding today from start to finish, shooting 3-under for the day (68), shooting even at 11 holes with five birdies. He finished the tournament shooting 2-over (215) to move up 28 spots to tie for 21
st with his low round tying for his lowest of the season (68 at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate).
Senior
Mitchell Schow moved into a tie for 31
st overall after shooting 1-under in the third round (70) with no bogies. He finished the tournament shooting 3-over (216), moving up 10 spots between the second and third rounds for his top-35 finish. Â
"Blake was fantastic today and Mitchell didn't have a bogie all day and that is incredible," Clegg said. "Tristan bogeyed his last two, but played amazing golf all day. To do all this in the final round was awesome."
Rounding out Utah's lineup was
Javier Barcos and
Colton Tanner, who both improved on their scores from yesterday. Barcos finished in a tie for 47
th after carding 1-under in the third round and 7-over for the tournament (220) with Tanner tying for 54
th after shooting 2-over today and 9-over through all three rounds (222).
Utah also had two players competing as individuals with freshman
Jesper von Reedtz tying for seventh overall in the tournament. He shot 1-under in the third round (70) and 1-under for the tournament (212), recording a birdie and an eagle in the final 18 holes.
Sophomore
Axel Einarsson finished in a tie for 21
st with Tomlinson, shooting 7-over in the final round (78) and 2-over for the tournament (215).
The Utes will return to action March 16-17 when they compete in the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. at the Omni Tucson National Resort.
