SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah gymnastics program has announced the addition of Alani Sabado to this year's recruiting class, signing the Temecula, Calif. native to a National Letter of Intent on Monday.
Sabado is the fourth signee for the Utes and will join the incoming freshman class of Deanne Soza, Jaylene Gilstrap and Lucy Stanhope, who signed in November. Sabado trains at SCEGA and is club teammates with current Red Rocks
Adrienne Randall and
Jillian Hoffman.
"Alani is an incredibly dedicated student-athlete," said head coach
Tom Farden. "Her work ethic and focus is why we started tracking her several years ago. We are excited that she chose to join our program a little earlier than planned. We do believe that she could make impacts on all events, but she will be an immediate lineup contender on both bars and floor."
Sabado is a three-time Junior Olympic qualifier (2017-19) in her elite career and at her last J.O National Championship appearance in 2019, Sabado finished in third place in the all-around. On her way to earning the bronze medal in the all-around, Sabado finished third on bars, fifth on vault, sixth on beam and eighth on floor. Also seeing success on bars at the 2017 J.O National Championships, Sabado placed third overall on the elite stage.
Just before competing at the 2019 J.O National Championships last spring, Sabado earned the title of the 2019 Region 1 uneven bars champion. To add on to her regional title, she also placed second on vault and beam, and finished in third place in the all-around at the 2019 Region 1 Championships. At the 2019 So-Cal State Championships, Sabado placed second on vault, third on bars, fourth on beam and in the all-around.
Most recently, Sabado scored a 9.90 on bars at the 2020 Carol Galleta event in late February to earn a first-place finish. Her 9.90 on bars at Carol Galleta ranked her in the top-five on bars in the country.
Formerly a resident of Virginia, Sabado collected regional titles on bars and in the all-around at the 2017 Region 7 Championships. The following year at the 2018 Region 7 Championships, Sabado placed third on vault and bars, and fourth on floor and in the all-around.
She also comes to Utah as an eight-time state champion in Virginia. At the 2018 Virginia State Championships, Sabado claimed individual titles on vault, bars and floor, while finishing in second place in the all-around and third place on beam. In 2017, Sabado nearly swept the state competition and finished in first place in the all-around and on vault, bars and floor. She finished in second on beam.
The daughter of Jonathan, a Lieutenant Colonel in the USMC, and April Sabado is coached by Kathy Strate at SCEGA Gymnastics in Temecula, Calif. She will graduate from Apex Learning Virtual School prior to joining the Utes and has held a GPA of 4.0 for the last five semesters across three different schools. She has an older brother, Jorel, and younger sister, Aya.
