Freshman
Javier Barcos is ready to get another year under his belt at Utah after having a successful true freshman campaign in 2019-20.
UtahUtes.com recently caught up with Barcos about his time in Spain, why he chose Utah and what his goals are for the upcoming season.
Q: What has been your favorite tournament to play in during your time at Utah and why?
A: My favorite tournament that I have played in is the one in Bandon Dunes. The way you have to play that course is totally different than what we are used to, so it was very fun to play.
Q: What would you say you've improved on most from your first year to now?
A: I think the biggest improvement I have made is my strategy on the golf course, now I am playing smarter and has helped me to have more regularity along with better scores.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing at Utah?
A: I love how good the relationship is with the whole team and the trust we have with each other helps us to improve every day.
Q: What kinds of things did you do this summer during your time off?
A: I went back to Spain for the summer and it was nice to get back home to try to disconnect from everything that was going on. It was nice just being back around my family, which helped me clear my mind and felt like it helped me be more prepared for this upcoming year.
Q: What are some of your goals for this upcoming season when you get back on the course?
A: My goal is to keep improving on my course strategy and is an area where I am continuing to improve on.
Q: What do you like most about playing for Coach Garrett Clegg and Coach Chance Cain?
A: I love the relationship that you make with them; you know that they will always be there to help no matter the situation. This is something that I appreciate a lot when you are away from home.
Q: Why did you choose Utah?
A: I chose Utah because when I talked to the coaches and the projects that they had in mind, convinced me that the team was going to grow a lot in the next few years.
Q: What is it about golf that you love?
A: I love that in golf you will always have parts of your game to improve. You don't get tired because you always have friends next to you that are trying to get to the same goal as you, so you will have someone that will push you to be better.
Q: What are some of your hobbies outside of golf?
A: I like playing any other sports with my friend where we always competing with each other.
Q: Who is your favorite player professional golfer and why?
A: My favorite player is Justin Tomas. I think is attitude on the golf course is fun to see and he is a really interesting player to watch.
Q: If you could go pro in a different sport, what sport would it be and why?
A: I would go pro in soccer. This is because since I was little, I have been playing soccer with my friends and I have really good memories.
Q: What is your go-to club in your bag and why?
A: I like the 56º because I have so much fun trying to hit shot from everywhere next to the green and hitting them as close as possible from the hole. Also, with that club you can hit a ton of different shots from the same position and that makes it even more fun to do them.
