Oscar Maxfield returns to the Utes this semester after a season that was shortened by the pandemic where he competed in three tournaments. His highest finish came at the Mea Lanakila Individual, tying for 15
th.
UtahUtes.com caught up with the Salt Lake City native to chat about his favorite tournaments, what he did this summer and what he wants to improve on.
Q: What has been your favorite tournament to play in during your time at Utah and why?
A: Hawaii last year was definitely the most fun team trip I've had at Utah, we had such a great time hanging out on the beach and playing different golf courses while spending a week in the perfect weather in the middle of February.
Q: What would you say you've improved on most from your first year to now?
A: The part of my game that has improved the most during my time at Utah is definitely my short game.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing at Utah?
A: Having great teammates and brothers and being able to travel the country to compete by their side.
Q: What kinds of things did you do this summer during your time off?
A: I have taken this time to really try to improve my swing mechanics as well as worked hard in the weight room to gain distance and speed.
Q: What are some of your goals for this upcoming season when you get back on the course?
A: My goal for our team this season is to get to the postseason, compete at regionals and make it to nationals.
Q: What do you like most about playing for head coach Garrett Clegg and assistant coach Chance Cain?
A: Both coaches have a lot of experience playing and coaching elite level golf, I enjoy trying to learn as much as possible from them to make myself a better player.
Q: Why did you choose Utah?
A: I've grown up a huge Ute fan and I have always dreamed of playing at the U, it was an easy choice for me
Q: What is it about golf that you love?
A: I love that you can never perfect the game, no matter how good you are playing there are always areas of your game that can improve and that chase of perfection drives me to get better every day
Q: What are some of your hobbies outside of golf?
A: Outside of golf I like to work out, play tennis and basketball, and hang out with friends
Q: Who is your favorite player professional golfer and why?
A: My favorite player is Tiger Woods, he's the best to ever play the game and his comeback has been an inspiration and a constant reminder to never give up
Q: If you could go pro in a different sport, what sport would it be and why?
A: I would definitely choose basketball, I have played all my life and I love the game
Q: What is your go-to club in your bag and why?
A: My go-to club is my 3-iron, any time I have an uncomfortable tee shot I hit 3-iron because I have a lot of confidence in myself with that club in my hands
