SALT LAKE CITY – Junior Olympic uneven bars national champion Sage Thompson has signed with Utah gymnastics as the third signee of this year's recruiting class. The 15-time Utah State champion and seven-time Region 1 champion joins the incoming freshman class of Grace McCallum and Kara Eaker, who signed in November.
"We are thrilled to have Sage join this year's top-notch signing class," said head coach
Tom Farden. "Sage is strong on all four events, but especially on uneven bars. Her captivating skills and pristine execution could make immediate impacts. It's great to have a local standout and we cannot wait for her to continue her career as a Ute in front of her hometown friends and family."
Thompson comes to the Utes as a three-time Junior Olympic National Championships qualifier (2017-2019). At the 2019 J.O. Championships, Thompson earned a share of the gold medal on bars and finished tied for sixth in the all-around (Sr. A) earning herself a position on the 2019 J.O. National Team. The year prior, Thompson placed second on bars and fifth on vault (Jr. E). Thompson proved herself once again nationally on her signature event – the uneven bars – when she earned the silver medal at the 2019 Nastia Liukin Cup.
Dating back to the 2017 Region 1 Championships, Thompson has picked up seven gold medals at the past three regional events, which includes winning three-straight all-around titles as a Level 10 gymnast. In 2019, Thompson won the gold medal on beam to go with her all-around title, as well as finishing second on bars, third on floor and fifth on vault.
Thompson was just as dominant at the regional level in 2018 when she earned gold medals in the all-around and on bars and beam, while taking home the silver medal on vault. She also finished fourth on floor. She was the 2017 Region 1 champion on floor and the all-around, silver medalist on bars, and bronze medalist on vault.
Over the course of her club career, Thompson has totaled 15 first-place finishes and 10 runner-up finishes at the Utah State Championships. At the 2019 Utah State Championships, Thompson nearly swept the competition, taking home the all-around, vault, bars and floor gold medals, while earning the silver medal on beam. She was just as convincing the year prior after winning the all-around, vault and floor titles. She finished as the silver medalist on bars and beam to round out the meet. In 2017, Thompson won the all-around and vault title, and finished second on bars and beam.
Thompson has spent the past year training at Olympus Gymnastics and had previously trained at All American Gymnastics for the bulk of her club career. She attends Skyridge High School where she holds a 4.0 GPA and is a two-time National Honors Society member.
Thompson raised almost $13,000 for cancer research in 2019 and was named the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student of the Year. Her and her family lost her father, Bryce, to a fight against Leukemia in 2014. She is the daughter of Jenni Thompson and has welcomed her step-father Chris Odom to the family. She has three siblings Davin, Creed, and Kade; and five step-siblings Courtney, Kaylee, Colby, Kamille and Cooper.
