SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's student-athletes had another outstanding semester in the classroom this past fall, recording a 3.329 departmental grade point average, which is the fourth-highest all-time.
Â
The 2021 Fall semester continued a record-breaking stretch of academic achievement for Ute student-athletes. The department's last four semester GPAs, which include a record-setting 3.573 in Spring 2020, rank as the four highest recorded.
Â
Utah Athletics has now achieved 31 consecutive semesters with departmental GPAs of 3.00 or higher. For the fourth consecutive semester and the fourth time overall, every sport program earned a team GPA over 3.00.
Â
"The academic achievements of our student-athletes continue to rank among the best in the history of Utah Athletics, and we could not be more proud," saidÂ
Mark Harlan, Director of Athletics. "While performing at an incredibly high level in competition, our student-athletes continue to place a high priority on their academic responsibilities and demonstrate the extraordinary work ethic and talents they possess. This comprehensive success also speaks to the tremendous work of our coaches, staff and academic support team, and their dedication to our student-athletes' achievements in the classroom."
Women's cross country earned the highest team semester GPA with a 3.725. The Ute harriers placed second at the Pac-12 Conference Championships and equaled their second-highest finish all-time at nationals by placing 20th. For the second consecutive semester, the men's side was led by the ski team, which earned a 3.542. The men's skiers teamed-up with the women's squad to capture the program's 14th national championship last March.
"Our student-athletes work really hard in the classroom and it shows," saidÂ
Chris Uchacz, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services. "The last couple of years has posed many different challenges and as you can see, our student-athletes have managed in stride and continued to excel academically."
Utah's record-setting GPAs have carried over to one of the best departmental graduation rates in the nation. According to the NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GRS) released last December, 93 percent of student-athletes at the U graduated within six years of enrolling. It was the fifth consecutive year Utah's score has met or exceeded the 90-percent benchmark. Utah's 93 percent rate is tied for the third-highest figure among Power Five public institutions and is tied for the seventh-highest score among all institutions at the Power Five level.
