SAN FRANCISCO - University of Utah gymnasts
Grace McCallum and
Makenna Smith have been named to the inaugural Pac-12 Gymnastics Preseason Watch List, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. McCallum is slated to begin her sophomore season in 2023, while Smith was named a newcomer to watch with her freshman season quickly approaching.
McCallum earned five All-America honors as a true freshman last season, collecting three regular season awards (all-around, bars, and floor) and a pair of awards at the NCAA Championships (all-around and floor). The Isanti, Minn., native led Utah with five All-Pac-12 awards last year and was the first Ute to earn first-team honors on every event and in the all-around since the 2018 season.
McCallum was the 2022 Pac-12 uneven bars champion last season after earning the second 10.0 on bars of her career, while she was also the Pac-12 co-champion on floor and the Pac-12 all-around runner up. She is just the fourth Red Rock in history to record at least two perfect scores on bars in a single season. McCallum posted a team-best 20 wins in her first season at Utah, and posted a career-best 39.775 in the all-around.
Smith enters her college career as a two-time medalist on floor at the Junior Olympic National Championships. She was the silver medalist at both the 2018 and 2019 national championships. At the 2019 Nastia Liukin Cup, Smith won the gold medal on floor, while she claimed the bronze medal on beam.
The Albuquerque, N.M., native is a nine-time regional champion. At the 2022 Region 3 Championships, Smith won the all-around and vault, bars, and floor. Smith made her unofficial debut in the Huntsman Center at Utah's annual Red Rocks Preview. With eight gymnasts competing on each event, Smith joined McCallum as the only gymnasts to compete in the all-around.
