As we celebrate Black History Month, Utah Athletics is focusing on the contributions and accomplishments of Black Americans who have our enriched campus, community and organizations. We also recognize the tireless efforts put forth by those who have committed themselves to social justice and equity.
As part of our month-long series, we provide a platform to members of the Utah Athletics family to express their views on our society today and where they hope we can evolve in the coming years. This month, more than any other, reminds us that we must be steadfast and vigilant in our commitment to human rights, equality and justice.
We also spotlight the Black History Month activities of our U.T.A.H. group (United Together Against Hate) on our Utah Athletics social media outlets.
"Black History Month gives us the opportunity and freedom to celebrate and honor those who dedicated their lives to making our nation a better place to live, those who fought for our civil liberties, and those who challenged systems that disadvantage some while providing advantages to others," said
Charmelle Green, Utah's Deputy Athletics Director for Internal Operations and Chief Executive Officer.
"Black History Month is also an important reminder that we all must do our part to continue the great work of those who came before us, because, despite the great efforts of many, there's still a lot of work to be done. As we take time to honor the legacies of Black American heroes, we must also ask ourselves, 'what are we doing to contribute to making our nation a better place to live for all people.'"
Throughout the month of February, Utah Athletics is producing a variety of social media storytelling content pieces and podcasts titled "Our Voices: Celebrating Black History Month." The social media series on Tuesday and Thursdays will feature highlights of interviews with members of the Utah Athletics family. The podcast, hosted by former Ute football player and current sideline reporter Steven Sylvester, will provide a platform for more lengthy discussions and will be released weekly on Fridays.
