SALT LAKE CITY — Utah has achieved its highest ranking since 2008-09 in the
LEARFIELD Directors' Cup winter standings, and its highest ranking among Pac-12 schools since joining the conference in 2011, tying for third place. The Utes are tied for 35th overall in Division I with 350 points, sitting in their highest position at this juncture of the school year since achieving a ranking of 33rd in the 2008-09 winter standings.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships. Utah Skiing led the way, contributing 100 points by virtue of its third consecutive NCAA team championship, achieved in March. The Utes' Pac-12 runner-up women's basketball program added 50 points by advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after a first-round win over Arkansas, while the men's swimming and diving program contributed 32 points from its eight participants in the NCAA Championship meet.
"Our student-athletes and coaches continue to achieve incredible results in competition, while maintaining the highest standards academically and in the community," said Director of Athletics
Mark Harlan. "We're incredibly proud of them, and excited to see the continued success of our spring sports programs, as well as our incredible gymnastics team pursuing a national championship this week in Fort Worth."
The winter performance has built upon the success of Utah's fall sport, which contributed 168.5 of the 350 total points accumulated thus far. The Utes' Pac-12 champion football team contributed 64.5 points, while women's cross-country added 54 points for its 20th-place finish in the NCAA Championship meet and the volleyball program scored 50 points by advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a first-round win over Utah Valley.
The winter Division I LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings will be updated in late April following the men's and women's gymnastics championships. Utah's women's gymnastics team enters this week's NCAA Championship meet ranked fourth in the nation.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
USA Today.
