SAN FRANCISCO – Utah gymnast
Kara Eaker was named the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week following her Perfect 10 on beam at the Rio Tinto Best of Utah last weekend. The weekly award is the first of Eaker's career and the first for a Red Rock this season.
Eaker recorded her first 10.0 of the season on beam at the quad meet in West Valley City, which marks the second perfect score on beam in her career. The 10.0 for Eaker was done in just her ninth career beam routine after she saw action on beam in seven meets last season and both competitions so far this year. She is now one of eight Red Rocks in program history to earn at least two 10.0s on beam in a career. Eaker's 10.0 in the fourth position for Utah highlighted the 49.675 beam rotation that currently stands as the nation's highest score on any event so far this season.
Eaker is tied for first place in the nation on beam with teammate
Maile O'Keefe through the first two weeks of competition. She earned NCAA All-American honors last year after tying for first place in Utah's NCAA semifinal session with a 9.9375 on beam. In her career, Eaker has scored better than a 9.875 on beam on all nine routines, which includes five of nine routines at a 9.9375 or better.
Eaker and the fifth-ranked Red Rocks will compete at top-ranked Oklahoma this Sunday, Jan. 22, in Norman, Okla. The Utes and Sooners will begin action at 6 p.m. MT on ESPN at the Lloyd Noble Center.
