SALT LAKE CITY – For the third time in 2022-23, multiple Utes were honored when the Pac-12 released its weekly swimming and diving awards on Tuesday and this week's award winners from Utah were
Andrei Ungur, who won Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week, and
Elias Petersen, the newly minted Pac-12 Diver of the Week.
Ungur's triumphs were two of six individual wins the Utes pocketed on Friday at USC and the senior from Romania came out on top in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. In the former event, he was just over half-a-second off his all-time record time of 45.05, finishing in 45.65. His 47.19 was a personal-best in the 100 fly, moving him up to seventh all-time in the Utah record book. Ungur is the second Ute to receive this title during the current season, as the same awards was bestowed upon
Evan VanBrocklin on Jan. 31.
Elias Petersen put forth a top-notch effort in both diving events, starting with the 1m, where his 331.25 points put him in second and well above the NCAA Championship qualifying standard. In the 3m, Petersen was even better, putting up a score of 365.08 that proved unbeatable, earned him first place and was just shy of his personal best. It was also yet another NCAA qualifying mark for the freshman. This is the second time Petersen has earned this award, with the first instance coming on Jan. 31
