SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Gymnastics is set to compete in a brand new gymnastics invitational owned and operated by ESPN Events, beginning in 2024. The invitational will make its debut on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024 at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah. The early-season podium meet will feature Utah, along with Oklahoma, LSU and UCLA next season.
The quad meet will feature four of the nation's top gymnastics teams annually and will air on ABC. The invitational will alternate locations each year as different teams are invited and rotate through the event. The second edition of the event will be held in Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025.
"We want to be geographically aligned with where the center of the sport is," said Clint Overby, the ESPN Events vice president, on coming to Salt Lake City. "That sometimes is a moving target. But we do think that being in Salt Lake City in year one is a natural fit; the fan base is there, people like that marketplace, there's a lot of great connections there. And the audience, from a TV standpoint, we believe has been established. So I think from our standpoint, meeting the needs from an audience standpoint is the primary goal, and then we can figure out the second part with respect to where the audience is willing to travel to or congregate to in terms of being there in person."
The 2024 competition for Utah Gymnastics will mark the program's first-ever regular season appearance on ABC. The four teams competing on podium at the Maverik Center next season will all compete at this year's NCAA Championships, and all four finished the 2023 regular season ranked in the top-six in the nation.
#5 Utah will face #1 Oklahoma and #4 UCLA tomorrow night in the evening semifinal of the 2023 NCAA Championship at 7 p.m. MT on ESPN2, while #6 LSU competes in the afternoon semifinal at 1 p.m. MT.
