SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah gymnasts
Maile O'Keefe and
Abby Paulson have been named College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans, marking the first time two Ute gymnasts have earned honors in the same year since 2016. CSC Academic All-Americans are recognized for their combined performances on the competition floor and in the classroom.
Â
O'Keefe, a two-time CSC Academic All-District honoree, picks up her first CSC Academic All-America award by landing first team honors for the 2022-23 academic year. She is the seventh Red Rock in program history to be named a first team selection. Paulson becomes a two-time CSC Academic All-American after earning second team honors for the second-straight year. She is one of four Red Rocks in history to have multiple honors in a career.
Â
Utah's reigning all-around and beam national champion graduated with a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology this past spring semester and will work toward a certificate in Positive Psychology during the upcoming academic year. O'Keefe is a two-time WCGA Academic All-American and three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection as well.
Â
O'Keefe became a four-time national champion after winning the all-around and beam national titles this season. She is a 16-time All-American during her four-year career, as well as an eight-time All-Pac-12 gymnast. The Las Vegas native is a four-time Pac-12 Champion, two-time Pac-12 Specialist of the Year (2022, 2023), and the 2021 Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year. Utah's 2023 AAI Award Finalist has hit 180-182 career routines and has totaled 63 career victories. In 2023, O'Keefe became Utah's school-record holder for most Perfect 10s in a career on beam and also holds the record for most 10.0s on beam in a single season.
Â
Paulson, who is double majoring in Kinesiology and Political Science, was named a second team CSC Academic All-American last summer. She is a three-time WCGA Scholastic All-American, three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection, and was Utah's Dahl Academic-Athletic award recipient in 2021.
Â
Paulson is a four-time All-American gymnast on beam as she looks to return for her fifth and final season next year. The Anoka, Minn., native is a two-time Pac-12 beam champion (2021, 2022) and is a three-time All-Pac-12 Conference honoree. She has hit 126-130 career routines as a Red Rock and has totaled 14 event victories, which includes 11 on beam.
