SALT LAKE CITY – Â
Amelie Morgan will hit a temporary press pause on her collegiate season with Utah Gymnastics to try and qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, competing at the English Championships in March. The Bristol, England native is no stranger to one of the world's biggest competitive stages, earning a bronze medal with team Great Britain at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Â
"I have made the decision to travel back to the UK to compete again," said Morgan. "I already feel so proud of how far I have come and I am loving my life here competing for Utah, however, I would regret not taking this opportunity to compete in my home country again. I love taking on a challenge and this definitely isn't easy but I can't wait for this journey alongside competing in the NCAA."
Â
Morgan has been a staple in the Red Rocks lineup since landing in Salt Lake City. Most recently, she has posted a new career-high score on bars at the Best of Utah with a mark of 9.950, capturing her first event victory. Along with securing her first career Pac-12 Specialist of the Week award after her performance on both bars and beam with back-to-back scores of 9.950.
"We are absolutely thrilled for Amelie to pursue her goal of qualifying for the Paris Olympics this summer," said head coach
Carly Dockendorf. "She loves challenging herself and is fearless in the pursuit of greatness. Â Amelie inspires all of us to go for anything in life and we couldn't be more proud of her."
Â
With the 2024 English Championships set to take place March, 1-3, Morgan will be able to compete in the best of both worlds, rejoining the Red Rocks in time for the Pac-12 Championships on March, 23.
Â
"Amelie is one of the hardest working, attention to detail and beautiful gymnasts I have ever known," said
Maile O'Keefe. "Her dedication to her sport, academics and love for people is beyond compare. Knowing Amelie is one of the greatest pleasures of my life."
Â
So far during her Utah career, Morgan has hit 66 consecutive routines. She has set the tone for the Red Rocks beam lineup as the leadoff routine in nearly every meet since her freshman season. Morgan collected All-Pac-12 Conference honorable mention in 2022 on beam.
Â
Morgan assisted Team Great Britain to the first women's team Olympic medal since 1928. In the team final, she competed on the uneven bars and balance beam, but it was really her stellar bar routine that pushed Great Britain to the third-place finish after sitting in fifth going into the last event. With the late surge by the British squad to earn a spot on the podium.
Â
Before coming to Utah, Morgan earned her first major championship medal in April of 2021, claiming the bronze medal on the uneven bars at the 2021 European Championships. She also narrowly missed medal finishes in the all-around and on beam where she earned impressive fourth-place finishes in her first competition in over a year and a half.
Â
Morgan is no stranger to the English Championships, with gold medal performances in the all-around and on beam in 2019. She also tallied bronze medals on bars and floor to round out her senior debut. Not too long after, Morgan added to her medal count and grabbed three bronze medals from efforts in the all-around and on bars and beam at the 2019 British Championships.
Â
Representing her country from an early age, Morgan was the first British junior in history to win five medals at the Junior European Championships as a member of Team Great Britain. She took silver in the all-around and beam competitions, adding bronze in the vault and on floor at the 2018 Junior European Championships. Continuing on with her successful 2018 season, Morgan tallied four gold medals in the all-around, vault, bars, and floor at the British Championships, securing a bronze on beam.
