Red Rocks post best score in a season opener for second consecutive year
SALT LAKE CITY – Fourth-ranked Utah Gymnastics topped their highest season-opening score, from a year ago, taking down Boise State 197.300-194.350 on Friday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The night kicked off with the Red Rocks triple banner reveal from the 2023 season, as Utah added their third consecutive Pac-12 regular season and championship titles to the rafters, along with an NCAA third-place finish.
Â
"What an amazing night tonight. Just immensely proud of this team. We scored higher than we did last year at the opening meet and I don't even think the scores reflected the performance we had tonight," said head coach Carly Dockendorf. "The quality routines we had were exactly what we see in practice each day and that's exactly what we were asking for."
Maile O'Keefe picked up where she left off from a year ago, scoring a perfect 10.0 in her first beam routine of the 2024 season. The 2023 NCAA champion on beam took her career total perfect 10s on beam up to 11. O'Keefe comes off a 2023 season where she set the Red Rocks record for 10s in a single season with six. O'Keefe wasn't done there, opening the season with a 9.950 during her first floor routine of the season.
Grace McCallum cracked the 9.9 scoring mark with both her floor and bars routine. McCallum returned to bars, putting last season's injury in the rearview, scoring 9.925 in her first event of the evening. She added her second 9.900 of the evening with a nearly flawless floor routine. On beam, McCallum displayed her signature triple wolf turn, scoring a 9.875.
Camie Winger got her first taste of collegiate competition, posting a score of 9.775. The Red Rocks leaned on the newcomers throughout the middle of their vault line-up, with Ella Zirbes posting a 9.750 in her first official vault. Ashley Glynn rounded out the trio of new Red Rocks, scoring a 9.850. Makenna Smith brought around the back half of the vault, scoring the first 9.900 of the night. Jaedyn Rucker anchored the vault lineup with the second-highest mark of the rotation, posting a score of 9.875.
Â
Smith took her momentum from vault to bars, scoring a 9.850 to get the Red Rocks rotation started. Alani Sabado took her first pass on bars, posting a 9.850. Amelie Morgan got her season started on bars, opening the season with a 9.775. O'Keefe opened her season on bars, adding the second 9.925 score of the rotation for the Red Rocks, following McCallum.
Â
Smith was the lone Red Rock to compete in the all-around during the opening night, compiling a score of 39.325 through the four events.
Utah will stay local and make the short drive to the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah, to compete in the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad. The preseason #4 Red Rocks are set to take on #1 Oklahoma, #3 LSU, and #5 UCLA at 2 p.m. MT on Saturday, Jan. 13.Â
