SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Baseball program will host the team's annual "Evening With" banquet on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025, with longtime MLB manager Buck Showalter set as this year's guest.
An annual staple in the Salt Lake baseball community, "An Evening With" is now in its 21
st season, serving as an unofficial kickoff to the Utes' season as well as a fundraiser for the baseball program.
The event will take place in the Scholarship Reception Room on the fourth floor of Rice-Eccles Stadium. The night begins with a 6 p.m. reception with dinner and the speaking program to follow at 7 p.m. A silent auction will also take place.
Registration is open and spots can be reserved
by clicking here. Tickets to the event will be available for $125 per person or $1,000 per table (each table seats 10 guests). Questions about the event or reserving your spot can be directed to Paige Burnhope in the Crimson Club (call 801-585-3515 or email pburnhope@huntsman.utah.edu).
One of the most respected figures in baseball, Showalter's 22 seasons as a manager include stints with the New York Yankees (1992-95), Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-2000), Texas Rangers (2003-06), Baltimore Orioles (2010-18) and New York Mets (2022-23).
He is the only skipper in MLB history to win Manager of the Year with four different franchises, earning the honor in the American League in 1994 (NYY), 2004 (TEX) and 2014 (BAL) as well as the National League in 2022 (NYM).
Altogether, he has won 1,727 games as an MLB skipper, ranking 19
th in big league history. His teams made six postseason appearances, along with an AL East championship with the Yankees during the shortened 1994 season. In 1995, he was selected as manager for the A.L. All-Stars, guiding a roster that included 10 eventual members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
He built a reputation of turning ballclubs into postseason contenders. With the Yankees, he inherited a team that had finished fifth in the A.L. East in 1991 and had not reached the playoffs since 1981. Showalter built up the squad to the best record in the American League at the time the 1994 season ended, then helped the Yankees reach the ALDS in 1995. Showalter became the Arizona Diamondbacks' inaugural manager, winning the N.L. West in 1999—just the franchise's second year of existence.
It was a similar story when he took over in Baltimore in 2010. Coming off a last-place division finish before Showalter's arrival, the Orioles reached the ALDS in 2012, won the A.L. East in 2014 and played for the pennant, then played in the Wild Card Game again in 2016. His 2022 Mets squad reached the N.L. Wild Card Series, after missing the playoffs prior to taking the reins.
He spent 2020 and '21 with MLB Network as an on-air analyst and returned to the network in 2024.
Raised in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, Showalter began his collegiate playing career at Chipola College in Florida. He transferred to Mississippi State, ultimately being drafted by the Yankees in 1977. It came after Showalter starred with the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod Baseball League, winning the league batting title with a .434 clip and being named a 1976 CCBL All-Star. He was induced into the Cape League Hall of Fame in 2002.
Showalter played seven minor league seasons, all in the Yankees organization, climbing as high as Triple-A. He was a .294 hitter with 17 home runs and 336 RBI throughout his 793 career games.
