SAN FRANCISCO – Utah Gymnastics fifth-year senior
Abby Paulson was named the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Paulson is a double major in Kinesiology and Political Science, with a 3.966 GPA, set to obtain both her undergraduate degrees at the end of the 2024 academic year.
Â
A four-time All-American on beam (3 regular season, 1 NCAA), she is a three-time All-Pac-12 Conference honoree and two-time Pac-12 Beam Champion (2021, 2022). Paulson becomes the fourth Red Rock to achieve this honor, joining Stephanie McAllister (2012), Georgia Dabritz (2015), and most recently Breanna Hughes (2016).
Â
"Abby truly embodies the definition of being a student-athlete," said head coach
Carly Dockendorf. "She strives to be expectational in all areas of her life. Abby takes great pride in challenging herself to be the best she can be in the classroom and the competition floor." Â
Â
Exceptional in all areas she is, as Paulson is an active member in the Utah community and her hometown community back in Minnesota. She volunteers with the Special Olympics in Utah and Minnesota, Handstand Walk for Kids, a pediatric cancer foundation based in New York. On campus she volunteers at the Benion Center, and Midvale Boys and Girls Club. She has also spent time volunteering on the Salt Lake City mayor's reelection campaign.
Â
In the classroom, Paulson is a four-time WCGA Scholastic All-American, earning Co-SIDA Academic All-American status in 2022, with two all-district honors to her name. She has earned All-Pac-12 Academic honors each year of her collegiate career. Paulson and teammate
Makenna Smith have kickstarted their own student-athlete-charged podcast titled "Between the Banners", telling the stories of student-athletes and the staff that help get them to goals of achieving championships.
Â
In the gym, Paulson has hit 150-154 career routines, collecting 19 event wins with 15 on beam and four on floor. With five event wins this season, including four on beam and one on floor, she earned a pair of wins against Arizona State taking the top spot on both floor and beam. Throughout this season, Paulson established an eight-consecutive meet streak of scoring 9.9+, during that span she eclipsed 9.950 four of eight times. Paulson was just as consistent on floor, going six consecutive meets scoring 9.9 or above for the Red Rocks. Paulson has two perfect 10.0, her first coming on the road during her freshman season at UCLA. Most recently she brought the 14,000 fans at the Huntsman Center to tears, scoring her second 10.0 on beam on senior night with her final performance on the apparatus in front of the home fans.
