PROVO, Utah — The No. 5 Red Rocks put forth another strong performance Friday night as they competed for the third time in an eight-day span, scoring a 196.975 to prevail over BYU at the Marriott Center in Big 12 gymnastics action. BYU finished with a 195.325.
Senior
Grace McCallum and junior
Makenna Smith led the way again, sharing the all-around title and combining to claim every event, with McCallum winning bars, beam and floor, and Smith prevailing on vault. They also received strong support from a number of teammates as the Red Rocks displayed their incredible depth on all four events.
The Utes and Cougars were squaring off for the second time this week, following the Best of Utah meet just four days ago at the Maverik Center, concluding a demanding stretch of competitions that began at home last Friday night against Iowa State. Utah was victorious in all three meets, taking a strong step forward as it moves toward the second month of the season.
"(It's) a lot, and I felt like they did a really good job of just bringing energy today," said head coach
Carly Dockendorf. "I definitely was wondering what it was going to look like…on our third meet, and I thought they did an excellent job of just bringing good focus, good energy and good attitude. For them to keep that mindset for three meets in a row, in a week, I think is huge. I also feel like the quality of their gymnastics tonight was excellent. It just shows their conditioning and fitness, and where they're at, to be able to do that this early in the season."
The Red Rocks steadily gained steam throughout the first rotation, as they began on bars, with
Amelie Morgan at No. 4 earning a 9.85, followed by
Ella Zirbes with a season-high 9.875. McCallum then came through in the anchor position with a 9.925 for the second week in a row to win the event, giving her the win on bars in all five meets this season. That score elevated Utah to a 49.250 on the first rotation, while BYU recorded a 48.775 on vault.
Utah began vault on a positive note with a 9.825 from Zirbes in the leadoff position, and sophomore
Camie Winger tied her season high with a 9.875 at No. 3. Smith then came through with Utah's best score on the apparatus with a 9.90 for the event win. The Red Rocks scored a 49.200 on vault to raise their score to 98.450 after two rotations, while BYU recorded a 48.550 for a two-rotation score of 97.325.
Moving to floor, Smith opened with a 9.85, and after three consecutive 9.80s, McCallum delivered the Red Rocks' highest score of the rotation with a solid 9.90 at the No. 5 position to win the event.
Sarah Krump anchored the Utes' floor rotation with a 9.825 to secure a 49.175 team score, and push Utah's total to 147.625 through three events. BYU stood at 146.300 after registering a 48.975 on beam.
The Red Rocks saved their best for last, putting together a 49.350 on beam for their highest event score of the night. McCallum shined again with a season-high 9.925 in the fifth position to win the event, while Winger and Smith delivered 9.875s in the second and third positions. BYU closed out its night with a 49.050 on floor.
"I think the consistency of this team, that's what I really love right now," Dockendorf added. "Three meets in a row, 24-for-24, (and) all our exhibitions also hit tonight. So just showing stamina to be able to do all those meets, and the consistency, I think, is huge. We definitely have some deductions we need to work on when we get back in the gym. We obviously haven't had any time to train in the last week, so it will be good to get back in. There are some common mistakes that we're making that we need to start working on and ironing out in practice so that they'll start showing up in meets a little bit more."
UP NEXT
Utah will now have a nine-day break between meets as the Red Rocks begin preparations for a road trip to West Virginia where they will take on the Mountaineers and the No. 3 Florida Gators on Sunday, Feb. 2, in Morgantown.
