TEMPE, AZ. — The fourth-ranked Utah gymnastics team came out hot for three events, but had to grind their way to a win on beam, 196.600-196.475 over the No. 24 Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday night at Desert Financial Arena.
Â
The Red Rocks started their meet against ASU the right way, posting a season-high on bars (49.600) that featured their first perfect 10 of the 2025 season from
reigning Big 12 Gymnast of the Week, Grace McCallum. Ella Zirbes continued her upward trajectory with a 9.925 that set up McCallum's exclamation point finish on the event.
Â
"I think she is just so dynamic and explosive in her elements," said head coach
Carly Dockendorf of McCallum's perfect 10. "She just had this kind of fluid movement throughout the whole routine. It's so satisfying to watch. It's a big dismount, and she just sticks it so consistently."
Â
Utah ended vault with a healthy 98.875-98.335 lead over Arizona State after posting a 49.275 that was aided by a career-high from
Ashley Glynn of 9.95.
Â
Zirbes got things going on the apparatus with a 9.875 followed by two 9.80s from
Camie Winger and McCallum. Smith set up Glynn's big score with a 9.85 giving the Utes momentum heading into rotation No. 3.
Â
Floor didn't disappoint for the Utes who posted a 49.525, with freshman
Zoe Johnson debuting with a 9.9 and Zirbes getting back to form with a 9.925 that she shared with Smith. Winger (9.875) and senior
Jaylene Gilstrap (9.90) rounded things out beautifully to give Utah a 148.400-147.425 advantage heading into the final rotation.
Â
"On floor, I thought our girls did a really nice job," Dockendorf said. "It was fun to see Zoe out there stepping in while we rested Grace this weekend. She did an excellent job."
Â
Beam got unusually hairy for the Red Rocks, posting a score of 48.200 after two falls and one major balance check shocked the second-ranked team in the country on the event. Despite the gut-check, Utah did enough to notch the win, with
Makenna Smith earning the top spot in the all-around with a score of 39.500.
Â
"On beam, we learned some valuable lessons," Dockendorf said. "My words to the team after the meet was that I would rather learn these lessons now than later in the season. We haven't had a fall on beam this year. This is the first time we've had a fall, and for it to be the first person up—we clearly didn't know how to handle that extra kind of pressure on beam."
Â
UP NEXT
Utah will take their lessons learned in Tempe home this week to host No. 21 University of Denverat 7 p.m. MT at the Huntsman Center for the "Stripe The Huntsman" meet.
