IRVING, Texas—The fourth-ranked Red Rocks placed two new athletes in their Big 12 weekly awards count with sophomore
Ella Zirbes being named Gymnast of the Week, and freshman
Zoe Johnson Newcomer of the Week.
This is the second time in 2025 Utah has earned two weekly awards in the same week, and the third straight week at least one Red Rock has been recognized.
Zirbes earned a season-high on floor of 9.925 while tying her season-high of 9.875 on vault to help the Red Rocks stay undefeated in Big 12 competition Friday night against No. 24 Arizona State. Zirbes also got her second-highest score of the season on bars -- a 9.925 that led to Utah's team season-high on the apparatus of 49.600.
Utah's standout sophomore didn't get off to the start she wanted early in the 2025 season, but impressively never gave up. Zirbes demonstrated strength and courage as she battled back into Utah's bars and floor lineups the last three weeks where her scores have steadily improved, all while inspiring teammates and fans alike.
Meanwhile, Johnson made a splash in her competitive debut as a freshman, posting a 9.90 on floor for the Red Rocks last week. Fellow freshman
Avery Neff's injury earlier in the season opened the door for Johnson to show off what she can do, and she didn't disappoint stepping into Utah's anchor position on floor for the first time in 2025, helping the team tie their second-highest score of 49.525 on the event.
The five-star athlete out of North Carolina has been a part of Utah's exhibition lineup most of the season, but proved she can be called upon to perform anytime, and anywhere.
Utah comes home to the Huntsman Center Friday for their "Stripe The Huntsman"/Community Cause meet against the Denver Pioneers. The meet will be televised on ESPN+.
