SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The No. 10 University of Utah Men's Golf team sits in a tight race through the first day of the Desert Mountain Collegiate, ranking second behind Mississippi State.
Braxton Watts leads the Utes on the leaderboard, sitting in a tie for seventh while shooting 4-under.
All play was suspended during the second round due to darkness and will resume tomorrow morning before the final round commences.
"Braxton played some really good golf today," said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "As a team we need to clean a lot of things up so that we can hopefully come out and make a run tomorrow."
Watts put together a great first round, opening the tournament with three birdies and a bogey to head into the back nine 2-under. The senior tallied three straight even marks before adding back-to-back birdies in the heart of the back nine to improve his score to 4-under. Watts finished the round with a bogey on the final hole to conclude the opening round 3-under. The Utah native got through the front nine of the second round before play was suspended. Watts currently ranks tied for seventh while sitting just five strokes out of first at 4-under.
Gabriel Palacios, reigning Big 12 Player of the Month, opened the tournament with an action-packed front nine, totaling two bogeys and a birdie on the first four holes before tacking on three birdies across the remaining four holes to sit 2-under. In the back half, Palacios tallied a pair of bogeys but secured a red mark on the second-to-last hole to shoot 1-under for the round. In the second round, Palacios totaled a pair of bogeys and birdies through the first five holes before finishing off the front nine with a birdie to sit tied for 13
th overall.
In a similar performance,
Sergio Jimenez began the first round with a birdie to immediately move under par but evened out two holes later with a bogey. Across the next four holes, Jimenez racked up three birdies before concluding the front nine with a double bogey, shooting 1-under. To open the back nine, Jimenez recorded back-to-back birdies and then grabbed another two holes later to move to 4-under. The sophomore struggled in the final holes of the first round, adding another double bogey and a bogey on the ensuing hole to finish out the round 1-under. Jimenez opened the second round with a bogey before totaling eight straight even marks before play finished for the day. Jimenez currently ranks in 24
th while shooting even for the tournament.
Davis Johnson started out well on the front nine, starting the round with three even marks before adding a red mark to sit 1-under. Across the final three holes of the front half of the course, Johnson tallied a bogey and birdie to move into the back nine under par. In the middle of the back half, Johnson ran into a double bogey but bounced nicely with a birdie on the ensuing hole. To close out the round, Johnson added another birdie with a double bogey to shoot 1-over for the round. Johnson got through the front nine of the second round with a pair of birdies and a double bogey and bogey to shoot 2-over for the day in a tie for 31
st.
Brandon Robison rounded out the Utes lineup, shooting even for the front nine before totaling three bogeys and a birdie across the final nine holes to shoot 2-over. Robison opened the second round with a bogey but responded with a birdie. Across the remaining seven holes of the front nine, Robison notched two more bogeys before finishing with a birdie. Robison is also tied for 31
st overall.
Individual competitor
Peter Jung shot 11-over in the first round before responding nicely in the second round with a pair of birdies and a bogey through the first nine holes.

The remainder of the second round and the final round of the Desert Mountain Collegiate will take place tomorrow morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. MT on the Outlaw Course.
