SEATTLE — The fifth-ranked Red Rocks did enough Saturday afternoon to get the win, and improve their National Qualifying Score against the Washington Huskies, 197.225- 195.875.
Â
Despite Utah helping its NQS score, head coach
Carly Dockendorf acknowledged she had hoped the team would have pushed a little harder against the Huskies.
Â
"I was definitely hoping for more today to be honest," said Dockendorf. "I thought this was going to be a really great opportunity for us to get a little bit bigger of a road score. I feel like this team is ready for that. Their skills have been looking really refined in practice, and their confidence is there in training."
Â
Despite some mild disappointment, Dockendorf did acknowledge some great efforts that she hopes will help to elevate the whole team moving toward post-season.
Â
"There were some exceptional performances today," said Dockendorf. "The return of Avery to the all-around, that was really exciting to see her back out there, and just take that first step of doing the all-around competing the leg events she has been training. I thought
Jaylene Gilstrap had a stunning floor routine. I think that is the best she has done this year. Makenna was exceptional in the all-around, Grace had some beautiful performances, and Ella exhibitioned beam as well, so, she did her first all-around performance, and that was the most relaxed I've seen her through the entire meet. I was really proud of her to see her accomplish what she did tonight, and do a beautiful beam routine as well."
Â
The Red Rocks got off to a decent start on bars, earning a 49.300 team score to take an early lead over Washington (48.675), which was highlighted by two 9.90 scores from
Ella Zirbes and
Grace McCallum.
Makenna Smith was solid as the lead-off with a 9.850 while
Avery Neff and
Amelie Morgan rounded things out with a pair of 9.825s.
Utah took a step back on vault going 49.150 to take a 98.450 – 97.475 lead over the Huskies after rotation two. Smith was the high-scorer of the group with a 9.95, while McCallum came in second with a 9.825.
Â
Floor was Utah's best event of the day, earning a 49.425 that featured two 9.90s from Zirbes and Gilstrap, while Smith earned a 9.925.
Ashley Glynn got the ball rolling with a 9.825,
Avery Neff made her return to the event with a 9.85, which McCallum copied to end the rotation.
Â
The Red Rocks wrapped up the day on beam with a 49.350 where Neff tied her career-high (9.925) and McCallum (9.95) shined. Smith earned a 9.875, and Morgan hauled in a 9.825 to start the final rotation.
Â
Utah did well in the all-around with Smith taking first (39.600), McCallum placing second (39.525), and Neff earning third (39.275) in her first time competing the all-around since her injury back on Jan. 17.
Â
"I feel like they know what they need to do," said Dockendorf. "We've done a lot of talking, and they know exactly what they need to do. They know the energy level they need to bring it to, but they need to just do it now."
