TULSA, Okla. – The No. 14 University of Utah Men's Golf team finished its first Big 12 Championships in seventh place on Thursday, posting its best round of the tournament to climb three spots.
Gabriel Palacios recorded his second straight round at even or under par to tie for 11
th.
"Overall, it wasn't the Big-12 Championship we would have hoped for when we arrived in Oklahoma, but we played a strong final 36 holes of golf," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "We made some major adjustments after day one and played a lot better. I'm proud of how the team competed this week and these last 36 holes were huge for us moving forward to the NCAA Tournament."
The Utes shot 3-under in the fourth round, significantly improving from their first three rounds (+15, +19, +6). Three of the five Utah golfers recorded their best round of the tournament as Palacios (-2),
Sergio Jimenez (-2), and
Brandon Robison (E) each notched a round score of even or under par. Utah put together the second-best score on par 3s, shooting 7-over behind champion Oklahoma State's 1-over.
On the team leaderboard, No. 4 Oklahoma State secured its second consecutive Big 12 Championships title while Cowboys' golfer Preston Stout claimed the individual crown with a 4-under performance throughout the week.
Palacios began the day's play with two birdies on the first four holes of the back nine to quickly sit 2-under. The sophomore then notched eleven straight even marks before adding another birdie to better his score to 3-under. On the final hole of the tournament, Palacios recorded his first bogey of the round to finish 2-under for the day and 6-over for the tournament. The Ute golfer used his best round to climb seven spots.
Braxton Watts started the fourth and final round on the back nine and tallied a bogey on the second hole before coming back with a birdie two holes later. Across the next three holes, Watts added two more bogeys but closed out the back nine with a birdie to move into the front nine 1-over. The senior evened out on the second hole of the course with another red mark before tallying a pair of bogeys through the next five holes. On the last hole, Watts drilled a birdie to shoot 1-over for the day and 9-over for the four rounds while tying for 20
th.
Jimenez got Thursday started with six straight even marks before sitting 1-over with a bogey on the seventh hole of the back nine. After another stint of six consecutive even scores, Jimenez tallied three birdies across the final five holes to build his best round of the tournament at 2-under. Jimenez finished the championships 10-over and leaped 17 spots into a tie for 23
rd.
Robison also climbed 11 spots during the final round after a chaotic day on the course. The junior finished the fourth round even after totaling six birdies and six bogeys. Robison shot 1-over across the back nine before shooting 1-under in the front nine to conclude the tournament 15-over and in a tie for 43
rd.
Redshirt junior
Davis Johnson used a hot start to post his second-best round of the tournament, tallying three birdies across the first four holes to quickly better his tournament score. Throughout the rest of the back nine, Johnson added two bogeys before tallying three bogeys and a double bogey to finish the course. Johnson finished 4-over for the day and 18-over for the tournament to rank tied for 50
th.
