STATESBORO, Ga. — The No. 26-ranked Utah golf team secured the top spot in the Schenkel Invitational standings after an eventful day two that saw it shoot 20-under 268 as a team. Three Utah players carded rounds under par on day two of the tournament, with
Brandon Robison and
Sergio Jimenez securing the top two spots in the Schenkel's individual standings.
No Utah player had a better first two days in Georgia than Robison, who followed up an opening round 67 (-5) with an even better 7-under 65 score.
Robison started his day off hot, birdieing the first hole of Forest Heights Country Club's Par 72 course for the second consecutive day. The senior continued to impress as the day continued, following up his round-opening birdie with six more down the stretch to take a bogeyless scorecard into the clubhouse. With the impressive round, one stroke off his career-best mark of 64, Robison enters the Schenkel's final round in first place, two strokes ahead of second place, with a two-day total of 12-under 132.
Similar to Robison, Jimenez also capitalized on a strong start to his week with a second-round 5-under 67. The 5-under round matches his round one score and brings his two-day total to 10-under 134.
The junior from Spain put together an electrifying performance during the first half of his Saturday round, shooting a 6-under 30 that included four birdies on the last four holes of the front nine. With another impressive performance at the Schenkel, Jimenez enters Sunday's final round tied for second place, two strokes behind the tournament's outright leader, his teammate Robison.
Davis Johnson rounded out Utah's trio of under-par performances with a round two score of 8-under 64.
Johnson was the tournament's highest riser, jumping 45 spots in the standings after a career-best 8-under round that included nine total birdies. After a career day, the redshirt senior from Arizona enters the final day of the Schenkel just outside of the top 10, tied for 12
th place.
Gabriel Palacios closed out Utah's four-player scoring group with a round two score of even-par 72. With a two-day score of 1-over 145, Palacios goes into the Schenkel's final day tied for 45
th place in the field of 84 players.
As a team, Utah's four-player scoring group found immense success on the front nine of Forest Heights' course, recording only two bogeys combined. The group was a combined 15-under 129 on the front, with 17 total birdies among the quartet of starting players.
With an impressive day two, Utah is primed to win the Schenkel for the second consecutive year. The team's two-day scoring total of 27-under 549 is 16 strokes lower than its 11-under two-day total of 565 from last year's tournament, wherein the Utes secured the 45
th annual Schenkel with a final score of 22-under 842. With a five-stroke lead over second-place Georgia Southern (-22), Utah will still need to play hard on day three if it wants to hoist the 46
